Jeffrey's Trackside Diner - June 2016

Thur. 92 Fri. 98 1st hot day.

Tomorrow at 3 PM I get my dentures back that are out for repair. Thats going to be the happiest day of my life.

Good evening all,

Many wishes all are doing well. I’ve not been to Utah yet (closest I’ve been is Denver Colorado, but only for a flight layover). Love to visit Bryce Canyon and Zion Natl. Park.

Ulrich, thank you for the 4-6-2 pic, she’s beautiful!

YGW, ugh break-downs are awful, sorry you got to put up with that.

Howmus, month’s supply of coffee is always a plus! Looking forward to seeing how your scenery will be developed.

Rideonroad, I hear ya on recovery days. I did a bike ride yesterday and I’m still feeling it.

Garry, Wildebeest sounds delicious, I’d like to try a bit.

Had a day off yesterday, and helped out around the house, and then pulled my “nice bike”, a 1990 Bridgestone RB-1 out of my room, where it’s been sitting since November. I also got my “kit”, jersey, bib shorts, cycling gloves, and shoes. The shoes have cleats that lock into the pedals. I’ve been a big fan of those for years now. I rode to a swimming hole using the backroads here in Lancaster. I rode from the city south to the countryside. 23.75 mile round-trip according to the cycle-computer. Have to do another one soon. Afterward, beer and pizza with a good friend of mine.

I’d been asked last month as to what interested me about Sergent couplers over Kadee. First off, I do like Kadee couplers, they’ve given me excellent service, however I’ve always wanted to try Sergent couplers ever since I first heard about them.

Also on the MR front, I installed a TCS Wow and speaker into my BLI/Sunset kitbash of PRR 1361. Tomorrow night, I’ll take it to the club and run it around the layout. I like the TCS Wow so far, and think I may convert my other steamers to TCS Wow decoders in the future. The audio assist definitely makes programming much easier.

Good Afternoon!

Well, the night was actually much better thanI had expected - I did get 4 hours of sleep in the first go and another two a couple of hours later. The pain meds seem to kick in, bringing the pain to a bearable level. But now I feel really sick in my stomach.

I did some w*rk on my layout, just to get my mind set to mor enjoyable things. I installed the console for the powerpack and the switch controls. It was a rather fiddly affair, as I had to doe soem of the wiring before fastening the console to the benchwork. It was one of those instance one could you a telescopic third arm & hand. Some how I got it done, but that will be all for the next few days until my shoulder is much better.

Here is the newest picture of my “true table-top” layout, resting on our dinig table:

YGW - I have received your email, but the enclosed pdf-file shows something black in a black environment.

“Miss June” is in my humble opinion the classiest German steam loco ever built. Despite her size, she displayed a certain sporty elegance unequaled by other locos of the steam age. Runner ups on my list of favourites are the former Royal Bavarian State Railway class S 3/6, also built by Krauss-Maffei of Munich in 1908

and the Royal Wurttemberg State Railway class C built by Maschinenfabrik Esslingen in 1909

The latter one dieappeared in 1955, so I never saw her. She had the nickname “The Beautiful Wurttembergian”.

Good morning.

It is fantastic to see so much participation the the Diner in the first day of June. Each post is appreciated.

Ulrich … Your Miss June reminds me of a Fleischmann model my Dad brought home to me from Germany when I was a boy. That is what got me started with HO. I was a Lionel kid before that. … I like the other old photos too. … Your layout looks good so far.

Ken … I would suggest paying off credit cards altogether ASAP. Each month the compound interest with rates over 20% will eat up your finances.

Reinhard … Cats are fine. They like it better if we are home, but I’ve been in Alabama a lot lately. June will be a full month with out of town trips to AL and also to MI.

YGW … That is a neat idea for people to get free material at construction job sites as you posted in the thread you started.

I actually worked a little on the layout yesterday. I love those sanity breaks.

Wildebeest is far better than the foul bird. But it has to be RARE (raw is better), they like to overcook stuff around here so that a poor LION can no longer eat them.

Monks are not supposed to eat the flesh of four foot animals, but the last time a looked, hamburgers do not have any feet.

ROAR

May I stand to correct you?

As you can see in the picture above, Hamburgers do stand on two feet - they even walk on them!

How about the LION take her out for dinner. LIONS like eating out, and the Abbot thinks that that is not a thing that monks should be doing.

Doesn’t want the LION to eat out, and then cooks all the meat fopr threde days in the potters kiln.

GRRRrrrr…

Two feat is not four feet, ergo they are fare game for monastic lions.

ROAR

Another glorious morning for a ride. Today I got to see the odometer on my current bike hit 30,000. (Miles, that is, not kilometers.) It was a balmy 70F at 5:30 when I left. It will heat up quickly on its way to a forecasted high of 104F. At least it is a dry heat. (I once heard someone respond to the “dry heat” comment by saying, "Yeah, but so is my oven, and I wouldn’t want to live in there, either.)

I didn’t get around to gluing down the track yesterday. Other good things occupied my time and attention. Maybe today.

Ken - no offense meant, but I wanted to say this already a long time ago. I don´t think your wife is to blame for you to have to battle the Yard War. With the state your yard used to be in you had to count on having to do something about it at any time. So don´t be mad at her, give her a big hug and take her out for dinner!

[dinner]

Looks like I’ll have a nice day for a bike ride. I, too, have been pushing myself and feeling it. Monday I did both my upper-body workout at the gym and a quick-paced ride on the road bike. Tuesday was hockey. I usually take Wednesdays off after hockey, but I am seeing and feeling the results from the gym so I went there again. Right now, I’m tired, but some aerobic exercise is needed for my diabetes regimen, and riding a bike on a nice day sure beats walking on a treadmill.

I hate doing yardwork and almost always pay someone when it needs to be done. The wife, on the other hand, expects me to do yardwork with her anytime she feels like bossing someone around. She thinks nothing of working in the yard for 8 hours at a time, and to be honest, I don’t think much of it either.

Dinner out, on the other hand, is something I really enjoy. It’s the wife with her fussy preferences in food that gets in the way.

And speaking of cats…today my daughter and I took an old wooden toy box and converted into a puss-a-potty. I cut a door opening in one end and made up a couple of dividers for the inside. The cat’s litter box will be inside in the center compartment between the two “bulkheads.” There is a small entryway by the door which will be carpeted to catch stray cat litter. The top can still be opened for “maintenance” but the whole thing should be a lot more attractive than just a cat box. She’s moving into a smaller apartment with her boyfriend, and we’ve been doing woodworking projects over the last few weeks. I’ve enjoyed this a lot.

Mornin’… well it was when I started this post!

Zoe, I’ll have the #2 special this morning, over easy on the eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of the sour dough toast. What? Your out of the sour dough bread? Well…, then make it a standard order of whole grain bread… Need a large pot of Seneca Lake Dark Roast Organic Fair Traded Coffee as well… Real half and half too!

Been chuckling about some of the posts this morning. Must admit I never thought of people who live in Hamburg as Hamburgers… I guess that is what they are! [:-^][(-D]

[color=red]Ken[/color], while Ulrich may have been a bit blunt, I think he makes a very good point. Blame doesn’t help the problem at all, it just creates bad feelings all around.

A couple quotes for today…

“Often it isn’t the mountains ahead that wear you out, it’s the little pebble in your shoe.” ― Muhammad Ali

“What we see depends mainly on what we look for.” ― John Lubbock

Just got an email from my DIL asking for my help. Seems she just found out her sore shoulder trouble is a torn rotator cuff. two tears, one major and one minor. She may also have a bone spur, too. She will have surgery on June 14 and since my son and his MIL work, she will need help taking the girls to their activities for anout 8 weeks while the shoulder heals (she won’t be able to drive during that time). I lewt her know i will be available as much as possible (which means their are a couple things I just can’t change and get out of, but mostly i can help out.)

Hope you all have a great day!

Now, imagine if JFK had visited Hamburg instead of Berlin …

Hey all

Been a very frustrating day. Started off with a very heated “discussion” with one of my venders who has been given a multi million dollar contract here and part of that contract states that he will manage the work. They are not managing the work. All kinds of things are going wrong because of his work not getting checked and verified it is completed. It got heated when he said he doesnt care about the contract and he wasnt going to discuss the contract ! WHAT ! [banghead] [:(!] The discussion went sharply down hill from there !

Howmus - I would have thought that saying was much older than Muhammad Ali ?

Mr. B - I dont think much of yard work either !

Richard - 30,000 miles ! That has got to be a record ! Guiness Book of world records maybe !

Lion - Oh geez you have me rolling on the floor ! With comments like " fare game", “Monastic lions”, “Foul bird” enjoyed reading your comments !

Ulrich - Hmmm I didnt open the PDF. will look into that ! Hamburgers ? LOL !

Garry - Thanks about the comment - just wish there were some takers !

Alvie - You may get a chuckle out of this - while driving teh truck I stopped at a light and though - gee some tractor trailer trucks brakes are stuck I can smell them, next light I see some smoke float by and think that truck has to be close by ! Where is it, I start twisting and turning to see the truck, next light I see LOTS of smoke roll by and look in my side view mirror and to my alarm I see LOTS of smoke pouring out from my wheels ! It was ME that was smoking [:$]

V8 - LOL Happiest day of your life yto get your dentures back ? Oh my gosh that is too funny ! What about your first kiss ? Or your first child ?

UP831 - Baling hay is HARD w**k ! Man I used to have to stack the bales of hay in the top of the barn. It felt like it was 140 degrees in there !

Angel - How did you functi

So you think your layout is sufficiently detailed?

Well, take a look at this:

Afternoon diners.

Cloe, I will have a Barry burger, fries, and an iced mocha coffee, please… Yes, it is one of those days… The heat and humidity is really beginning to bug my asthma. (There is another med I can go back on, but I really dislike the side effects of it.) Having the burger and fries, mainly because I know I should eat something… I just don’t get that hungry when I am working harder to breathe than I should have to!

Weather: Yesturday we hit 88, high humidity, today we are forecasted to be around 85, very high humidity, with a chance of thunderstorms later. The storms last night woke me up, one loud thunderclap, and a ton of rain. (My dog made sure the thunderclap woke up all of us, as it startled him and he started barking.) If the humidity was a little lower, I could manage better. But between high pollen counts, and high humidity, I am not breathing as well as I should be.

Wk: Had to wk on Monday and Tuesday, on Tues we had a couple of tux orders, they came for their appointments, but the unscheduled truck showed up at the same time… Cut my lunch short to help out. Was already having some asthma issues when a jerk customer took a body spray that we had for sale, opened it, and sprayed a ton of it to see what it smelled like… First, we have testers for a reason bud, second, they are below the counter for the reason that myself, and the store manager, both have breathing issues. One of the other managers will get the tester, and spray a small amount onto a card for that reason. You don’t need to spray half the can into the air. Asthma has been really bad ever since.

Got called into w**k yesterday, as the one managers’ grandmother was taken to the hospital, and was placed into ICU. She is not well at all. (93, they found her unconscious on the floor… Was unresponsive still last I heard.) The local hospital had to send her elsewhere, as the local hospital had zero beds outside of ER, an

Afternoon Diners,

The same way everybody function before the invention of cell phones.

My decided to get my new phone last night. This morning was a different story. They say it’s easy to more your same number to your new phone. Which provided to be difficult. I had to call to find out my account and pin number which I don’t remember. (Long story short) With a lucky guess with my pin number I was able to keep my same number.

Good Afternoon Diners,

Flo, coffee with lots of cream, please.

Ya know, some days just go wrong.

Day started out ok. Met with the rep for the custom cabinet line we are becoming a dealer for. I’m excited about that.

Then…a client calls about a panel he has needed to finish his project. The van isn’t here so we can’t get it now, and I promised this guy the van would be back first thing this morning and we’d get the panel to him. Well, the van arrives an hour later. i explain to our person driving down to the warehouse exactly what to pick up, with accompanying paperwork. He was talking about some cabinets he was to pick up to assemble for a different client. Next thing I know, he’s off in the van and left the paperwork I gave him on the counter. I run out to catch him and say come back. He says tomorrow morning. I say, “no,now!” He says, “I come back tomorrow morning.” At that point, ya just walk away. This is costing my client money by having employees doing nothing because we can’t or won’t deliver the goods when needed. Grrrrrrrr!!

[banghead][8o|]

Obviously I’ve left some details out, but you got the jest of it.

If president Kennedy had gone to Hamburg… When he said, “Ich bin ein Berliner,” he called himself a jelly donut! He should have said, “Ich bin Berliner.”

i did the same thing in Frankfurt. I ordered a hamburger at a food place and got a weird reaction. It wasn’t until 3 years later I found out what I’d done.

I hope everyone is ok and safe.

Hamburger were largely unknown in Germany until the mid-1970´s. The first “Golden M” restaurant started in 1971 in Munich and it took a few years to spread across the country. McD.´s was for a number of years the only place you could order a hamburger, so a weird reaction when ordering it outside of one of their places was quite normal [(-D]

Recently, hamburgers are on the retreat in the fast food market, replaced by “healthier” food. It´s strange, though, that KFC, Pizza Hut and others, aside from Burger King, never really caught on here.

The most popular fast food in Germany since 1949 and still going strong is “Curry Wurst” - what that is you can look up here.

If anyone complains, point out that cows are much, much bigger than four feet.
