Jersey Railfanning

I’m in central NJ.

Looking for good viewing areas, especially of container consists.

Any advice ?

Steve

If you’re looking for something unique, even if not container traffic, check out the timetable of the NYS&W and catch some late-night freights on one of the oldest, continuously-running railroads in the entire country. Its trains run through most of Northern NJ after midnight.

I’ve never been there, but I’ve been told Bound Brook is a great place.

You get the action from the CSAO Lehigh Line (NS Lehigh Line and CSX Trenton Line) and NJT Raritan Valley Line together. You can watch from the station platform, so there’s no need to worry about trespassing.

I’ll second Bound Brook station. Easy to get to, and fairly well protected from the weather. Containers, autos and manifest freights all run through there. I’ve been there many times (I have to travel to that part of NJ for work every couple of months), and it’s a nice relaxing place to watch/photo trains. Some views here on my site, if you’re curious:

There’s other spots east and west of there, but this gets you the best of all four worlds (CSX, NS, CR & NJT)

Bound Brook sounds good and it’s only 20 min from work.

Why i never thought of that spot, I don’t know.

I think of that line as commuter, didn’t think freight would pass through.
