Jordan Spreader Models?

Ok, I’ve seen Jordan Spreaders alot up in northern Michgan, And was wondering if a model railroad company made on like on the link below. I haven’t seen any company make one but, I’ve seen models of them. The photo isn’t WC but it looked the same as the one below did.

All I see is a TriPod hosting logo. Might have to be a member to see it.

Here’s a better site http://67.15.20.45/images/images2/d/DSCF8880.JPG.10259.thumb sorry it’s not a bigger photo

Overland makes them in brass (actually imported from Korea) and they are available in O, HO and N scales. Should be in the $300 - $400 range. Your LHS should be able to help.

MDC/Roundhouse had a kit for a Jordan spreader, but I don’t know if it’s been re-issued by Horizon. Walthers also offered a Jordan spreader in HO, which may still be available. I built the Walthers one, with a few of my own modifications.

I made the wing blades positionable, using wire and some parts from a disposable lighter.

Very nice job Wayne. I don’t know how much they are used out here in the West, I don’t recall seeing one around, but we do use rotaries. There are usually 3 o4 four of them sitting around Roseville yard and in Reno.

The MDC model was a kit bash. The kit provided plans and parts from several of their other kits that required a great deal of modification.

The Walthers model is item 932-5350. Price $24.95, It is currently “out of stock” on their website.

I found a built one on ebay, current bid $61.00 + about $9.00 shipping with four days to go.

The Walthers version of the Jordan Spreader has been out of production for a few years. Your best bet to go about finding one now would be either hobby shops or someone at a train show with lots of older stock, or ebay.

I didn’t know MDC made one too. Might have to keep an eye out for that one as well…

The Roundhouse model was in their “3 in 1” series and wasn’t an actual kit to make a Jordan spreader. It contained one of their cast metal tank car frames, a box car shell and a whole lot of instructions on how to scratchbuilt the rest on your own. On the box end it read something like “additional material to be supplied by modeler”, and how!

I made one many years ago, as well as most of the other models in the series. The instructions were a learning tool for me, as they listed the materials to use - Plastruct shapes, styrene strips and sheets, etc., so I just had to find them all. Using their supplied methods and templates, I was able to finish the model. And I learned a lot about scratchbuilding that I later applied to my hobby.

But it certainly wasn’t a “kit” like the Walthers model, I have a few of them too.

That’s one of the things that I miss about MDC/Roundhouse: it always seemed like they gave you credit for having an imagination. And you could buy just about anything that they made, direct from the factory, either as a whole kit, but better yet, as separate parts. Their brass handrail stanchions for steam locos were as nicely done as anybody’s and affordable, too.
