June 2025 MR Article Help

Yet another one for my Forum friends. I received my June 2025 MR yesterday and came across the article on the coupler knuckle rack. As described, the structure being made of wood is a bit too old for my 70s era layout. However, the article has given me to idea to build something similar. What would I need to do to bring the rack 50 odd years forward?
As usual, thank you for any assistance that can be provided.

Why? Who says one of those would not be built out of wood today? Let alone in the 1970’s?

I was thinking I had seen pictures of those in my era that were all made of metal. No wood involved.

I’m sure there would be wood or metal ones in almost any era of railroading history. Something like that is more likely made from whatever is on hand rather than some specific design or material.

The advent of practical stick welding probably made welded fabrication preferable; that certainly seems to be the case for long-shank couplers themselves.

A quick Google search will reveal multiple companies producing specialty knuckle racks and handling equipment. All the ones I saw were welded construction.

Era-wise, that’s where my mind was going.

Not the same idea as the article but I found this: HO Scale Scenery Parts - Coupler Rack with Couplers | eBay
