One thing that’s easy to overlook is that John Armstrong’s layouts, with the exception of the Canandaigua Southern, were designed for clients of his professional layout design business, to suit the clients’ lists of ‘givens and druthers,’ not his own. His own preference was for once-through, long main line with return loops at the ends, single visible level and an opaque backdrop to prevent seeing one end of the railroad parallelling the other. Judging by the fact that the CS was satisfying to its builder for half a century, he got his ‘druthers.’
Would that we could all be so lucky.
