I picked up these two working locos for a nice price of $2.00 at a yard sale the other day, and I was wondering if anyone could give me a little history/backround on them, and what they’re known as, or at least where I can find this info.
The 0 4 0 steamer looks like an AHM (Rivarossi) for sure, but it’s missing the tender. The other is a 35 ton switcher, again quite possibly an AHM. Sure looks like it.
Well, judging from the pictures…
The first locomotive looks to me like a Life Like model. It is an 0-4-0 steam engine used for switching duties. It should also have a tender with it, because steam engines need a ample supply of coal. Not bad runners, but not suited for main line pulling.
The second locomotive I don’t have an idea on manufacturer. It’s a small switcher diesel engine, it maybe an Athearn “Hustler” loco. Designed for the same task as the steamer. Well suited for industrial settings. Not certain on the running characteristics though.
Due to the small amount of wheels on each model, the electrical pick up will not be the best, and unpowered switches may cause them to stall. But for $2, who can resist?[:p]
And don’t worry, more and probably better information should come soon compared to what I can supply.[:D]
And [#welcome] to the forums!
Cant tell but they look like neat little loco’s.
Just watch…the tender for the 0-4-0 Dockside will cost him $45.00 on eBay!!
They look to be in pretty good shape for $2.00 locos. Do they run at all?
The diesel is not an Athearn Hustler, it looks like a 35 ton MDT diesel offered by AHM and others.
One the bottom, there should be a “made in …” That would help us provide better information.
no no no the 0-4-0 is a bachman i have one just like but it is southern.
I was going to say Bachman on both.(why else would they be that cheap). Did you try looking on the underside to see if there is a name on either?(should be some where)
Well Nfmisso and On30Shay you’re correct, through some research and your help I narrowed it down, the diesel is a GE 35-Ton Switcher made by AHM. Thanks guys.
The 0-4-0 was made in Macau (which is a special administrative region of China),
and as for JohnT’s EBay comment, “Ha! I’m more resourceful than that.” I picked up an SP GP60 in fair shape, minus all the hand rails and stanchions. I didn’t wanna spring for brand new ones so I improvised with old bailing wire. My point is I’ll scratch build that 0-4-0 tender, and yes they both run fine for switching duties.
Thank you all for your wisdom and help, anymore help is greatly appreciated.
If you put electrical pick up on the tender, for the locomotive, it will improve the operating characteristics. See articles on adding electrical pick ups to the P2K 0-8-0.
Thanks nfmisso for the tip, I’ll check it out.
heyy im interested in that chessie! what a nice piece. if u dont like it or want it let me kno ill be sure too grab it! let me know!

Check this out:
That’s a Model Power 0 4 0. sure looks like yours to me. I think we got the little diesel nailed down. I KNOW it’s a 35 ton. I used to have one. Looks like an AHM.
