Just press on the new axle gear??

Ok, so I found out from my LHS that I could just order in some new gears to replace the ones on the Stewart locos that had split. I had always thought I had to get a whole new axle and wheel set like I did for all the P2K splits.

Anyway, the LHS only had the gears, not the axles & wheel sets, so I had some sent up in the mail. I forgot to ask…

Is it merely a case of pressing these on and setting the wheels with a guage? I did one for a trial, but was wondering if they should be glued or something else done to the gear to make it stick to the axle tightly…afterall, the slipping of the split one was the problem.

Or is pressing on good enough, even though I can twist them a bit as I found when repositioning with the NMRA guage?

Thanks for any feedback.

It’s just that easy. I’ve never had to glue the axles into the gears.

GEARS SHOULD ‘press fit’ tightly onto axles. If they don’t you need to get a set that matches. I’m not sure what you have. Some axles are in Millimeters. Do not glue.

Contact Bowser/Stewart directly.

Yes, I believe these are the right gears. It was determined earlier that the Stewarts have Athearn drives and the LHS sold me Athearn replacement gears that they said would work.

BTW, the gears (old and new) have notches on the shaft and little tabs inside. These don’t seem to have any particular application in the locos I am working on.

I BELIEVE only one Stewart Engine has an Athearn drive (U25B?). Some were KATO, and some were AJIN . Some may have been Stewart made.

Obviously LHS sold you Athearn gears, and they do not fit. Check with Bowser.

No, no Don. You have got the wrong end of the stick somehow.

The gears I have do fit. I was just asking ahead of time if I should just press them on. I installed one, and then asked here in the forum. Now I have them all installed and they work fine. I was just checking on the procedure.

I know about Stewart and all their permutations. In earlier threads (search my posts) it was determined that these, indeed, are Athearn-drive Stewarts. I do own several other Kato drive Stewarts. Luckily these do not seem to have split their gears.

The pair I am working on now had split 7 of the 8 gears in total…but that was the subject of another thread.

Thanks for your interest.
