Just started after 25 years

Hello all,

I’ve taken the plunge. I’ve decided after 25 years of waiting, that I’ll build my first layout. I’m basing the layout on The Carolina Central form N Scale Model Railroading. For those who don’t know, the layout is N scale and 28" by 80". I’ve bought the hollow door, track, engine and power pack. I’m doing this layout as a joint venture between me and my 5 year old son. My dad didn’t have time with me to do a layout (not his fault, he worked HARD), so I’ve decided to do a layout with my son. I hope to take pictures along the way. Wish me luck…

Hello and welcome! Sounds like a great start. Good luck and have fun. If you have any questions you’ve found the best place to get the answers.

As the man Howard Zane says it’s never too late to have a happy childhood. I got back into trains for exactly the same reason. My dad started the project with me and my brother but then abandoned it as we were serious enough. I took it over and after sticking with it for about 10 years had a decent layout. got away from the hobby for a while but now back for good.Good luck with your new railroad and please post pics.

I still wished I knew more about N scale when I got into the hobby. When I was 14 (4 decades ago) my dad did buy me a N scale train set and it was junk. LHS replaced the engine 3 times then we exchanged it for a slot car set.

You sure can do a lot with a hollow door and N scale.

looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with.

Hello Jesse and [#welcome] to the Forums.

As has been mentioned, you will get a lot of help here. All you have to do is ask or put a few key words in the “Search Community” box on the right hand side of this page.

If you haven’t already done so, take a look at the WPF (Weekend Photo Fun) thread to see what is being done by the Ladies & Gentlemen who frequent these Forums. Some of them have links to their own Web Sites included. Of particular interest is DAVE VOLLMERS’ link to his N Scale Empire on a door and the yard addition that he is just finishing up.

Remember, just take your time and have FUN with your son.

That’s what it’s all about.

Blue Flamer.

HI and [#welcome]

I have come back to the hobby too.

As Blue Flamer mentioned do a “search community” on the right side of the screen for “Dave Vollmer”- He has a wealth of info and pics of his N scale layout-on-a-door.

Have you decided to go the old standard of DC operations or are you opting for DCC this time around? Digital Command COntrol allows more fun and control over your engines, not by track voltage like DC. Just a thought.

When i got back into the hobby, I wanted HO {had O as kid and later picked up some N someone was throwing out} but I wanted to try HO. I started as cheap DC stuff to get going, but quickly decided DCC was what I wanted after I wasted some money on cheap DC stuff. SO it’s something to think about. Speaking of cheap it is easy to spend cheap just to have someting to play with, but don’t negate the idea of studying what you want and making your $$ count towards what will serve you well and for a long time, even if more expensive.

Just a few thoughts and my 2 cents worth.[2c]
