I Just wanted to know how other trains.com people think is the best of the best.
Hello Jonothon, Not trying to be overly critical but…
consider re-wording this poll. “The Best of the Best” might conflict wih “What is your favorite…” Best of the Best could be in: horsepower, speed, body design, tractive effort, etc.
While my favorites are diesels, the best as far as environment, cleannliness and noise levels would be the electric locomotives like AEM7s, GG1s, or E60s.
By the way. As far as locomotives in the U.S.A diesel-electrics and diesels refer to the same thing. The typical diesel-electric like an SD50 uses a diesel engine that runs an alternator that supplies electrical power to the systems onboard and the traction motors.
The FL-9 is an example of a Diesel Electric-Electric. Equipped with a standard diesel locomotive engine plus an electrical system that allows the FL9 to run off of “Third Rail” power.

I like the disel-electric / diesel because I’m actually too young to remember the steam locomotives…I was born in '59 and that was the year almost all steamers were removed from commercial service…I had a Southern Pacific local freight train that ran right past my back yard where I grew up in San Antonio, Texas that serviced the Beckmann limestone quarry …I never saw steam engines on that particular branch but I do remember some RS-11’s, EMD F7 A & B units, and lots of GP7’s and GP 9’s in those days.

What’s the difference between a “dessel” and a “dessel-eletric”?
There were Diesel-hydraulics in Europe that used a mechanical transmission to power the wheels, but all but a few experimental units on the SP and Rio Grande in the USA have been “diesel electrics” or just diesels. They don’t power the wheels directly from their engines with shafts, but have the engine drive a generator that makes electricity, which powers electric motors in the trucks, which power the wheels.

Steam rules in appearance. But diesels are better at being locomotives. They do their jobs more reliably. This applies to both models and prototypes.

We don’t want to run anybody off especially the youngsters. I always check the profile to see what info the person has left for us to know. When I see the person is a student I try to go much easier on them than we would an adult. School (and life) is a learning experience so instead of criticizing why not teach and help the youngsters learn the correct way. By helping and teaching not only do you help improve the skill of the person but you also make a friend. It certainly is much easier to receive constructive criticism from a friend than hurtful criticism from someone who just wants to “bust you out”. Also when an email addy is shown, we can “help” privately and not “openly” in the forums. Now if you made a mistake wouldn’t you rather have someone let you know privately and not point out your mistake for the world to know? I know I certainly would. Lighten up, especially on the younger ones. Help, teach, and encourage–now that is a better deal. [;)] [:)] [:D]
Many of my posts are made very early in the morning after I get off work when I am tired and make spelling mistakes. Also some spelling mistakes are just typos. We all make them. I try not to but “things” happen.

I hate to be a nitpicker but the locomotive type referenced in the poll is spelled “diesel”. Also if you’re “wandering” you’re like Moses leading the children out of Egypt. I think you mean “wondering” as in “I wonder about that”. I know how typing on a computer and then clicking on “submit” can lead to spelling errors, but we’re getting really bad (yes “we”, all of us!) about that on these forums.

I didn’t vote on this pole. Gosh, I must be gett’in old because I have no favorites. I like them all. I’m modeling steam era Erie, but would not put it beneath me to run other roads and diesels on the pike, just for variety if the mood hits me. I own both steam and diesel and in other road names beside Erie. Thanks, Ken
