K-Line tank car

I just signed up so I’m still learning about the site

I buy mostly older stuff and just picked up some things from an estate sale.

One of the cars was a K-Line CONOCO tank car with what looks like a coin slot on top. It seems to be in good shape, except for the dust. Is this supposed to be a bank? If so, after the coins go in, how do they come out?

w m, welcome to the forum. Since no one else has answered, I’ll take a stab at this being one with a lot of K-Line stuff.

I do not have the car you describe, but I do know K-Line made these kinds of “piggy-bank” cars, which accounts for the slot on the top of the car. These K-Line tank cars have two end caps on each side of the body. Usually they have some small amount of glue holding them in place. Could very well be on these bank type tank cars, that the ends are removeable.

You may have to remove the metail rail on the body though if it has one and wraps around the ends of the tank car. These can be popped out starting at the point nearest the ladders going to the dome. Then try pulling on the end caps to see if they come off. My guess is that at least one of them does.

I don’t have this one either but possibly you can locate some info here:

There were a series of cars that K-Line started making that were indeed banks. They were to commemorate the state quarters that have been issued. I think Lionel continued them for a while.
