I received the May issue today & was quite surprised at how poorly the K-Line’s Train Master test sample was painted. My Lackawanna and Virginian are both flawless except the Lackawanna’s pilot steps do look as if they “…had been painted with a heavy hand.” Anyone else receive sloppy paint jobs, or is the test sample a fluke?

The “other” forum seems to have a lot of defenders on this particular engine. If you are planning on buying one, you should take it out of the box and look at the details and see if you can run it.

I have the TMCC version, Flawless Paint job, and runs excellent. I also purchased the Smoke & Hoen version, same results. I think KLine had the misfortune of sending a lemon paint job for review

At least K-LIne didn’t pick a “ringer” to send! Things like that happen to engines bought off the shelf.

Hello,

I bought the VIRGINIAN Trainmaster and love it! Mine is conventional with horn and smoke. However, the smoke unit does not work that well below 10VAC, and on my layout the engine is cruising at a good clip at 6-7VAC. I’ve seen this issue with Lionel too where the smoke units are suited to the higher voltage of TMCC as opposed to conventional operation. Wish I had bought a GG1 a couple years back, but, at $100.00 I thought it was too good to be true, my loss.

Hi all,

I also have this. It is a good puller. The things I dislike about it is;

  1. It’s length, with 027 track, it has some issues with over hang on corner, but it does make it around the 027 corner.
  2. The smoke unit. As George has pointed out, it work good at an idle, but not under way. When you have high enough voltage for the smoke, it is running way to fast.
  3. The horn only works on mine at an idle, not under way. Also when you release the horn button it stops now without any fading.
