K-line turnout only throws in one direction

Good day, everyone. I have a K-line left hand o gauge switch (low profile) that only throws remotely in one direction. It will switch from straight to curve (green to red) remotely. It will not return to straight remotely. Manually pushing a car into the curved section will activate the non derailing feature, but doing the same thing into the straight section will not activate it. I am controlling the switch with momentary push buttons from my control panel. The buttons are not the issue. When I hook it up to a K-line controller I get the same results. The insulating pins are placed correctly. When I substitute an identical switch into that track position the substitute works correctly. I’ve taken the faulty switch apart, and nothing obvious jumps out at me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you’ve done most of the trouble-shooting. At this point I’d suspect the coil for setting it in the straight direction is open. If you have an ohm meter, try measuring from the common voltage terminal to the curved activation terminal (or the activation rail for the curved section) and see what the coil resistance is, then do the same for the straight. My guess is you’ll see some small resistance for the curved and the straight will be open. I don’t know what a K-line switch looks like, but as a reference, a postwar 1122 is about 9 ohms.

If that turns out to be the case, look for the thin wires coming from the coils to whatever they tied them to internally (the nearest binding post?) to see if the issue is there. It could somewhere where you aren’t able to get it, so it’s a lost cause. Is there a chance something sat on the straight activation rail for some time and burned it out?

Thanks, Bill. I’ll try that. I bought it used so I’ve no idea what it’s history is.
