Does anybody have any experience operating with this coupler? Are cars more prone to derail? Or possibly less prone to derail? I’m thinking about converting most of my Atlas tank cars. Any comments would be helpful.

Vito,
I see your concern about the coupler. I feel that if one coupler lifts, it could lift the adjacent truck and cause a derailment.
If you really need something like this shelf coupler, I would look into solving the problem with the rolling stock or humps/ bumps in the trackwork. I seldom even want to even use the smaller #58 on longer equipment for fear of uncoupling problems due to irregularities in the trackwork. If you are looking to use the coupler to simulate tank car prototype and your trackwork is fine, that is a different matter.

The #118 works fine. Just a few things to keep in mind. As on the prototype they keep the cars coupled together during derailments. Like the old mantua loops when one car heads for the floor they all follow.
