I’m planning to use the Kadee #148 whisker on HO scale Atlas GP40, is that possible?
Is the #148 whisker the best Kadee coupler? And is the #148 whisker coupler a ‘safe’ investment? I mean, if I buy this for every loco and car now I don’t want to change to something else for a long time.
Can it be used with the #308 “under-the-track” uncoupler?
Kadee # 148 is the same as a Kadee #5. The centering spring is a metal whisker and not the separate piece as in the #5. The shank is thicker to make up for the old centering spring in the draft gear box. Work great and less parts.
I’m not using the 148 .I like the look ef the scale size coupler. I’m waiting for them to add the “whiskers” to the scale size coupler. I’ve already changed to the # 5 & don’t want to have to change 2 more times.
Well…the posting from Kadee indicated a whisker 148 with #58 coupler is in the works. If you can live with the out of scale size of the current #148 coupler it is a ‘safe investment’. The #148’s will probably outlive some of their owners! [:D]
I’m using 'em with Kadee #321 and Kadee electro-magnet uncouplers and they work perfectly. [tup] [tup] [:D] Don’t see any reason why if they work with #321 they shouldn’t work with #308 “under the track” uncoupler. Think working with Kadee “under-the-track” uncouplers was part of the design brief for the #148.
I have tried the 148 on several boxcars and am very happy with them. I would buy more but frankly the #5’s are very common and can be found quite cheap. Once the novelty of the 148’s wear off the price will come down and I will buy them in bulk like I do the 5’s now. Either are great.

i to will be using the new whisker coupler as soon as funds become available.have used the ole #5 since the 1960’s but always have had trouble with the bronze centering spring on some installations, even after installing them per directions.hopefully they will come in other configurations such as under/over set.only have about 25 cars to convert to so shouldn’t be to expensive.
