Kadee Coupler Question

Looking fo information on which Kadee Couplers to use on an Athearn HO scale Bombardier Coach Car (Athearn model # 2566)

there was a string on here that was using one long shaft #28 and a medium shaft #5 for each car…it sounded like a good idea…I have a complete set of SP Daylight Athearn passenger cars and run all #5’s with no problem…Chuck

#26 will be a better match for the #5 than a #28, surely?

I use #58s on mine, not had any problems though they do need to run as a set - they’re not too keen on reliable uncoupling over magnets and sometimes need a bit of manual assistance to couple up (nudging one or both knuckles into the right place with a handy bit of wire). They do look the part though, and as mine run as a set it’s not a problem.

Thanks all… I have some #5’s on my work bench somewhere, I’ll locate them and give them a try.

you are right…the #26 …wasn’t sure if it was the #26 or #28…my dislexia is kicking in full drive…should have gone to the train room and looked at the package before i posted…chuck

I’ve got 14 Bombardier (GO Transit) cars and installed #5’s on all of them. I’ve never had any problems.

MOST 20 series are replaced by the less expensive 40 series except for special application’s, or where a smaller coupler box is needed. My Genesis SD-70I/75M’s needed 20 series.

x6 couplers (#6, 26, 36, 46,) have longer shanks designed for Passenger cars wheras the #5 was for 40’ - 60’ freight.

Kaydee’s recommendation’ standard is for 22"r.

Chuck:

There is no problem on your layout with #5 couplers because Athearn Passeger cars are ‘Shorties’, using Talgo trucks - all designed to circumvent tight radii.
