Kadee Coupler Questions

Got yet another one for the forums. I have an engine that for coverting to Kadee couplers suggests using a 30-series coupler. The main problem that I am running into is that I have used the 30-series coupler boxes on other projects and I hate using those boxes. They are a pain in the neck to work with.

My questions are these: Can a 20-series coupler and box be subed for the 30-series coupler? Are there any adjustments that would need to be made for the change in boxes? Are there any other things that I should be aware of?

As usual, any assistance the forums can provide would be most welcomed.

Hello all,

Nothing against the fine folks with years of experience here in the MR forums but I would direct this question to Kadee.

You can e-mail Sam direct or start a thread on the Kadee forums.

When I’ve had specific questions regarding Kadee products I’ve had great luck with either of these two methods.

At the recent Rocky Mountain Train Show Kadee had a booth. I was able to meet Sam in person and thank him for all his help with my questions via both e-mail and the Kadee Forums. He was glad to hear that he was able to help.

Kadee is truly a family owned company and has time for everyone.

Hope this helps.

Hi FRRYKid,

I hear you on the #30 coupler boxes! Fussy, fussy, fussy!!

There is a small snap together box #252 that is designed to replace the regular #30 boxes. It is designed to work with whisker couplers which is certainly a plus, but the fact that it snaps together instead of having to be glued or welded would seem to make assembly much easier. I haven’t used one yet but I think they would be worth a try.

Dave

I sent an email to Kadee a little bit ago and we shall see what they come up with.

I have put a package of those on my list of items. The 252 idea will be the backup plan if the email doesn’t could up with ideas.

I just bought some of the 148’s with the snap together box, and i love them much better then gluing the old style together.

The 30 series will work in the #5 box since most are #5s with a insulated shank.
