Kadee HO3n trucks - assembly hints

Well I may have met my match with the Kadee 717 HOn3 trucks.

I knew that I would need the Kaydee jig assembly due to having to line up the eight springs, four on each side of the truck assembly.

Well I assembled the jig and thought that inserting the lower board holding the springs onto the jig would be the toughest part of the assembly.

I was wrong, the board with a bit of maneuvering fits onto the jig quite well, placing the 8 springs onto the 8 needles is the tough part.

Kadee instructs the user to find a large box and to assemble the trucks inside of the box, as the springs have a tendency to become airborne the sidewalls of the box will keep most of the springs from ever reaching the floor. This is a good tip, the larger the box the better.

So, any tips on how to handle the extremely delicate springs to keep from flying and to aid the assembly process?

These trucks require assembly. I read the directions and thought that just mounting the lower board

Gee, no hints at all from anyone?

Don,

I actually have the fixture and some HOn3 Kadee trucks to assemble, but I’ve never used it. IIRC, the one tip I recall hearing about these is to use a tiny spot of grease or soft wax to keep the springs stuck in place while you’re lining everything up.

The fixture for the Hon3 trucks has 8 pins, 4 at each end of the assembly jig to hold the springs in place while the truck is being assembled.

The hard part is getting the 4 springs in place on each side, once you have 2 in place the springs being so close to each other keep disturbing (launching) the adjacent spring. When you finally get the 3rd in place it seems impossible to place the 4th.

have got the trucks & assembly jig. Looks like I’ve got something to kook forwad to!. The suggestion of using a spot of grease seems good & I will try it. Let you know how things turn out. jerry

You might want to check out the HOn3 trucks made by Blackstone Models the next time you need trucks. Already assembled and very high quality. Some of the best rolling trucks I’ve seen in any gauge.

I did the day following my attempt at assembling the Kadee HON3 trucks. Will try again, maybe, maybe not

I’ve heard it suggested to use a loop of thread through each spring, so as to minimize loss.

I’ve used a ruling pen to grab and compress the springs. Kadee’s #241 spring-pic might also be useful.
