Kansas City approves streetcar extension
While this streetcar was not really needed as Kansas City is not as congested as Chicaogo, Dallas, etc. Think it is a good investment for the future of downtown K.C. I can also see families riding it for fun. Not as much to do here.
That’s a huge improvement over the original 2 mile line they were planning. Now they’re getting somewhere. I’m guessing they mean 8 miles on top of the 2 miles already planned so a total of 10 miles? Regardless of if it’s 8 or 10 total, good to hear. A much better project now.
Congrats to my adopted hometown for spending millions to link the various ghettos of eastern Kansas City. I wonder how many people will be murdered aboard the cars during the first year of service? I could write a book about the illegal activity I’ve seen happening along these streets from the KCT east-west corridor.
Perhaps, Mr. Pumphery, the streetcar line will lead to the revitalization of the area. It will certainly add to the visibility of the area, and criminals don’t usually like to perform in front of crowds.
George, people like you are what is still keeping this project from every achieving reality. You seem to be stuck in the 19th century. Of course, if you were stuck there, you would be riding the streetcar system to work and to play.
The next thing that is REALLY needed is one (or more) extensions into Johnson County so that we could get to downtown, the River Quay, and Crown Center more easily. Those extensions would revitalize the entire downtown and to the immediate south.
Some local property owners have really objected to the property tax funding mechanism employed by this streetcar system. However, the starter route has seen three large development plans announced by private property owners specifically because of the streetcar line plans, and one of those is not even asking for tax breaks! So far, the project may be on track to enhance the values of the properties near the lines.
This metro area really needs some rail commuting options, and this will hopefully get us off to a good start.
