Kato Ditch issue

Hello

I noticed that on some of Kato’s work, the SD90mac’s the ditch lights are in the wrong spot. I wonder did anyone fix this problem on there models, if so how did u do it?

Thanks

Caso

The ditchlights are NOT in the wrong spot, but rather in the wrong spot for CP.

You have already asked this question in this thread…

http://www.trains.com/TRC/CS/forums/1125570/ShowPost.aspx

The only way to fix it is to kitbash your current SD90…or buy brass. Remember that plastic mfgs have to make a generic model to represent multiple prototypes to keep cost down.

If you intend to be a Canadian Model Railroader, be prepared to do more than just move ditchlights! There are alot of features on different units that require alot of work for a model to even come close…

David

I don’t have to be a rivet counter to be a Candian Modeller.

Thanks for help, seeing it did nothing for me.

Hello? If you aren’t a ‘rivit’ counter, then why would you care that the ditchlights were not above the anti-climber to begin with?..or that they dont flash…or any other topic you have started in the past week concerning the ditchlights on this unit?

It did nothing for you, eh? You started a topic saying “Kato Ditch issue”, meaning that Kato has done something wrong with their ditchlights. I replied by saying that they have to make compromises, and they do.

If you want to relocate the ditchlight, it is an involved process…and requires scratchbuilding-out of the box skills.

David

Ok…if you want to do this, and you are serious then this is what I would do.

Buy some Surface mount LEDs (Micro bulbs are too big for above anticlimber ditch lights…they are too thick). Buy some styrene and fabricate the ditch light mountings (or you can use brass). Install the SMT LEDs in the mounting and wire it up.

Or, you can send it to me and Ill do it for you for a fee…

David

Isn’t that “selling” on the forum? I thought that was against the rules.

Zing!

Geeeeeesh David nothing like biting poor Casco.subs head off. Yes he worded his post poorly buttttttt your reply and tone really are overboard. I am sorry we are not all in your modeling class. Oh by the way after your last flame war why do you want to start another is it because you have three days before fergie shows up again.

[:)]

Tone? Tone is how YOU read it, not how I typed it.

David

Dont start again.

Personally I understood what David said. All he did was offer to install ditchlights for Caso if e so wanted them. Thats not exactly posting a full palge advertisement, moreso helping out a fellow forum member.

i think i found the issues David.

Ditch lights wrong spot, paint job is wrong ( needs to be darker), lack of lift rings. I don’t see anything else. If you know of anything else let me know. Was there any articles on these locos in CRM?

I got 6 locos to correct.

5 undec, one painted in the right colour.

So it will be a quick job when i get one loco done, to the next few.

Thanks for all the help.

Just so you know Caso, the modifications you are doing makes you a kitbasher and would be NO different from what I do. Now…if I am a rivit counter, then so are you…

Anyways…your best bet is to find some good photos of these units…specific photos (ie…the exact number you want to model). Then detail to your hearts delight.

There might have been an artical or 2 in the past but I am not sure where.

David

I agree with everything David said. He is only telling it like it is. Besides, if you would have read other posts by Caso, the ones about hooking up LEDs just about drove me nuts just reading them.

Here is what I can do for you Caso. I see you are moving to southern ontario. If you want, you can ship me one of your units with the decoder you intend on using. I can then build up the ditchlights, wire up your locomotive and program it. You can then use what I have done and use it to replicate with your other locos.

This is an option, but the shipping is killer as I live in Alberta.

David

Guys,Just because Caso wants a correct model doesn’t make him a rivet counter but,a ADVANCE modeler…There is a difference between the 2 types of modelers.

Okay everyone, take a deep breath and say it with me:

“Rivet counting is not bad!”

Jeesh, it gets so tiresome hearing so many people bash rivet counting. I drift into and out of it, but it’s not bad, it’s just a different way to enjoy the hobby.

Those who react with a knee-jerk aversion to anything that smacks of prototype fidelity risk stunting their growth as modelers.

Brakie…re-read the thread. Caso brought up the ‘rivit counter’ first. He was calling me a rivit counter because I commented on how you need to do alot of things to Canadian-ize locomotives…I am NOT a rivit counter, but rather I get my models as close as I can.

Dave V…how can you be a rivit counter in a scale that has rivits the size of oranges, and couplers the size of small countries?[^]

David

Simple! Oversized rivets are easier to count![swg]

True…but I have seen some fine N scale modeling in the past…

David

I guess I have caused this forum enough grief. I think I won’t post for awhile. I apologize for making people nuts or get upset with me. When the katos are done I will post the pics, sometime middle of July.

Thanks for all your help guys.
