Hey Everyone
Im cleaning up some past projects this week. I got a kato f40ph Im wondering when they added flashing strobe lights to these locomotives? Second question, I have a digitrax decoder for it, how do install the strobe light, any tips or photos? Is there a strobe light kit, like a grain of wheat bulb, but strobe?
Thanks
Caso
IIRC, the F40PH engines were delivered with the twin strobes on the roof. They were later removed and replaced with ditch lights. The early GE AMD-103 engines(P40) were delivered with built in strobes above the windshield, and theee were replaced with ditch lights as well. I am not sure on dates, but I remember seeing P40’s converted in the 1998 time frame…

Depends on the decoder. Which one do you have? It has to have more that 2 light outputs (if you intend NOT to sacrifice the rear or front light). For example, the Digitrax DH123 wont work because it only has 2 light outputs. The DH163 has 6 light outputs.
To install, drill a hole large enough for the Stobe light model and install the stobe light (it usually will come with clear plastic as a lens). Install a light (either LED or micro-bulb) behind the clear plastic…connect it to the blue/green (or violet) wire of the decoder (with appropiate resistor). Program your CVs for the strobe light and go and run it.

I have this decoder.
In the kato loco, SDH104K1C+FN04K1 Combo.
What would you advise me on for putting in the dual flashing strobe lights, im not gonna put ditch lights, unless someone has some more info on the time frame on the strobe lights and the ditch lights.
Amtrak fans please help me!!
Ah…a sound decoder…good choice.
There are soldering pads on the daughter board for the extra light outputs.
I would find 2 super bright LEDs and mount them as I have said above.

I’m glad my Bachmann Spectrum F40s already have those strobe lights
anything special to use for the bulbs?
any suggestions?
Do I install the lights in one output?
Resistors needed?
All of this has been answered before…please search.
