I am looking at stripping a couple of Kato F40PH’s that in Amtrak to Via Rail. Could anyone help we out for what paint I would need and any technique I would need to use? I have some Highball decals which I am going to use. Thoughts or opinions?
Grit blasting is the only way I strip Kato shells now. As far as painting goes…Use your favorite paint as usuall. Clear coat with a gloss (I use Future Floor finish), Decal and seal with what ever finish you want.
I agree - for the amount of hassle it will be ( stripping and prepping) - it’s better to just start undec. I had my VIA units painted for me and I went with the undec units as suggested by the painter.
Yes it was a Amtrak, now it is stripped I used the Chamelon stuff.
What do you guys suggest for paint to paint the locomotive? Modelflex which colours? I need the gray, yellow and blue I believe. I am not doing the rennaisse locomotives, never seen them on the Toronto to Windsor corridor before.
You’ll see them soon enough. VIA has been mainly using the first Renaissance painted rebuilds on the Ocean down east, but there are now 7 of the units done, and over the next couple of years, they’ll all be done (and more of a modeling challenge, with the extended body at the rear). I’m painting up an undec Walthers F40 into the Ren colours, as I already have two factory painted Walthers ones in VIA’s Yellow/gray/blue scheme.
