I just replaced two more of my older HO scale Atlas motors with the Kato HM-5 motors.
I have to say I love, love, love em!!!
They are smooth, very quiet , are not power hogs, and are very easy to put in.
I also tried a test and replaced an older (1980’s) Con-cor motor with the HM-5 and found that the old motor was not the problem (slow speed), but that the gear ratio in the truck assembly was finer toothed and subsequently ran at the same speed as the older motor.
I thought this might be a problem, but I had to find out.
Oh well, I just need a few more bucks to get some Atlas truck assemblies.
Will it ever end!!!
And I am quessing that my older Roco steam locomotive is geared the same ratio.
Roco changed the gearing from 10:1 to 17:1 for the last runs of the Atlas FP-7 and the Con-Cor GPs and SDs. Sounds like you have one of the 17:1 versions.
Other than the fact that the Kato motor did not speed up the loco, did it improve the low speed and running qualities of this 17:1 model?
My 1975 Atlas FP7 has 10:1 gearing. It always ran well but the motor had deveoped a “Growl” so I re-motered it with a Kato HM-5 motor. It now runs almostly exactly the same as my stock 1990 versions. The single large silver colored flywheel has more momentum than the 2 small brass flywheels on the newer ones, so it coasts a bit farther.
Both of my 1990 Atlas FP7’s versions seem to have 19:1 gear ratio. (according to my count).
My E-R FP7 has a 17:1 ratio but runs quite a bit faster than the other ones. (faster running motor I guess) It has the same Roco trucks as the other ones so I am surprised that it has another gear ratio. (3 different gear ratios?)
