Just got a new Kato GP35 at my local shop, really excited as it is a great looking model! Also got a decoder that they recommended, but after getting home and trying to fit it into the standard NMRA 8pin socket, I found I had to remove the top weight first. Two questions:
1: Does removing the supplemental weight hurt performance and if so, how?
2: Is there a decoder that would fit without removing the top weight?
Sounds awful! Seriously, that makes me feel a bit better. I was afraid it would wreck the balance or traction or something. But if it is not all that useful and I’m pulling 10 cars at most, I should be good.
It depends on how much weight you’re talking. As dave noted though if it’s too much loss in traction, add a loco (which looks better anyhow).
If you’re worried though just take the decoder back and get another standard one that will fit better. Some come with some wire between the decoder and plug to help pack it. The other option would be to get a wired one and plug and solder your own to the length you want.
I have several Kato GP35 mechanims, and all have had the top weight removed when I installed decoders. A Digitrax DH165KO is easy to install; just be sure to clip the truck leads soldered onto the front of the decoder so they won’t interfere with the cab (attach the wires from the front trucks close to the decoder and then snip off the leads).
