Kato HO SD70Mac Sound?

Hi all,

I am trying to figure out what the selection is for installing sound in my Kato HO SD70Mac? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks much,

Peter

You can try this:

Or possibly this. Not sure how similar the interior of the SD75MAC model is, but may be close enough to try:

Here’s the “root directory” page with links to other installation examples:

I used the MRC Sounder, it’s a sound only decoder (so you need a regular decoder to run the motor and lights). Sells for under $30. It is selectable for four different engine sounds: “F unit” (basically generic 1st generation EMD), “Alco”, “SD-60” and “SD-70”. The attached 1" speaker was too large for my SD-70MAC, but a 1/2" speaker and enclosure from Tony’s Trains worked well. There’s plenty of room in the back of the engine (espeically if you remove or cut back the clear light tube, so you could probably fit in a larger speaker turned sideways, or an oval speaker (like 1/2" x 3/4"), pretty easily.

Great Stix,

That is what I was seeking, someone who actually had one installed. So what do you think of the sound? Realistic (for the size)?

I was told about the new QSI Revolution that just came out in another forum. I think I might pursue that as I was not impressed with the MRC sound decoders I put in my N-scale SD70. Mainly the quality… I was satisfied with the sound.

Thanks again,

Peter
