Kato Locomotives and Code 55 track

Will the N scale Kato Locomotives work just fine on Atlas code 55 track. I just want to know if the axles or the trucks will be flat on top of the rails and not riding on rail pins of the code 55 style track. Thanks.

Ryan

Ryan,

The flanges on Kato locomotives are low enough to clear the rail pins, however, you might have problems with the flanges on your rolling stock. Micro Trains has started putting low flanged wheel sets in with it’s newer releases for this reason.

I used Micro Engineering code 70 flex track on my layout, but my neighbor has a section on his layout that uses there code 55. All of his rolling stock runs through without a problem.

I’d suggest that you compare the Atlas to the Micro Engineering flex track to see if there’s an appreciable difference in the pin height. You could also ask to run a new freight car across the track to see if there is any interference.

We both used the deeper flanges on our rolling stock as we run trains of up to 45 cars in length. They don’t look as good, but it helps prevent derailments where tighter radius curves are a necessity.

I hope this is helpful and good luck with your project.
