Excellent review, very informative article. Good historical context overall.
Hmm very nice mr staff this zephyr is truly amazing.
I’d love to see this (or any E-5 model) in HO! Is any manufacturer listening?
I’m thinking that most modelers would prefer the loco supplied with the set to be without the truck skirts. Very good, well done, informative review.
I totally agree with Peter Limper from Tennessee. Won’t
some manufacturer come out with the CB&Q E5 in HO?
I know other modlers in my model railroad club that
feel the same. I model both the California and Twin Cities Zephyrs in HO.
Got it for Christmas - a great looking set.
Too bad MRC or someone else hasn’t made a sound capable decoder for this set; that would rock!
Another vote for an E-5 in HO!
Wished they would do one in HO!
Nice article and nice set (I have one). I’d like to know though if the consist ever deviated from the normal five cars. Did they ever run extra coaches, baggage cars, etc., and under what conditions. Did E7,s or 8’s ever power the train? Inquiring minds need to know!! Anyway nice job all around-
I would like the complete set in HO.
ALL E-5s came with truck skirts.
There were two “phases” that correspond with the E3 and E6 production (Jeff Wilson was the first to notice this). The Kato model is Phase I.
While there are recorded instances of the E5s being used on the CZ, they were not regularly assigned to it.
E5s were used on most everything else and were regulars on the Twin Cities Zephyr… which would be a dandy future project for Kato! The Wabash Blue Bird was identical to the cars in the TCZ with the exception of the truck cutouts and position of the baggage door on the combine. Kato already has the TCZ dome; the Diner is very similar to the CZ one, the “pattern” Dome needs only a new roof for the Budd Coach, and a E5B and E7A (for the Wabash) would give two complete trains!
