I just recieved a mint condition looking Kato RS-2 from someone I bought some locos from. He threw it in for free because it did not work when he purchased it brand new. Now before I delve into it’s workings - is there a history of problems or things in particular I should be looking for to get this running ?
from what ive heard there great pullers
The motor contacts are connected to the power supplied by the trucks via brass strips that are riveted together. I found that a little solder where that rivet is makes the contact true…I bet that’s the problem with your not running. The motor isn’t getting any “juice”.

Thanks - I’ll give it a look see.
I had one working in DCC for like 4 months then it mysteriously stopped working (and fried the decoder!!!)… still a project I have to work on, but beware…

Brian, I’m curious, what brand of decoder fried in your unit? Did the loco have many hours running time when the incident occurred? I had a similar issue with an older Kato made Atlas RS-3 and a TCS A-1 decoder.
It had 10-20 hours of running time… (it is actually the RSC-2, not the RS2) I had it for about 6 months and I was using it to test my track (with circuit breaker in place!!!). I had a NCE D14SR in it and it worked great. Then it just stopped working. I put a new decoder in and NOTHING now on the test track. I am quite annoyed, but I haven’t had time to truly troubleshout (busy laying track for my yard and doing scenery…).
