I have the K1 set of KATO Unitrack in N scale and was wondering if I should sell it. I am really sure that I am going to sell it but I was wondering what your thoughts are on this. The reason being is that the Unitrack does not look realistic so I did not think it would look great in the layout I want to start.
Finlay…I am using KATO track it looks better if you paint the sides of the rail and ballast…Cox 47
I understand that the Kato track works very nice, but is rather expensive to use for a larger layout. If you have limited funds, and you know you’re not going to use it in your layout, I’d consider selling it and use the money to purchase the type of track you intend to use.
I’ve seen layouts with Kato track. It can be made to look good, but most of the information and materials you will find are geared to the use of flex and/or sectional track (without base).
YOU could do worse - much worse.
-
You are using roadbed with track - which limits the choices.
-
At what point do you get ‘LOOKS’?
-
Do you have the skills, time, (and money) to get REALISTIC track?
I have just started buying Atlas Code 80 track for N scale. I find it looks more realistic.
Can’t go wrong with Altas code 80. That’s what I used. Widely available and easier to get at good prices. Atlas code 55 looks nice, but it was just coming out when I built my layout and I already had a lot of code 80 from a prior layout attempt.
Sorry guys, but ‘N’ gauge needs Code 40 - 55 to even look ‘realistic’.
Example 1 Frogs.
Example 2. Rail Cross section.
