Katrina 1, Amtrak 0

An AP story by Andrew Taylor, just posted on Yahoo, discusses cuts the White House may propose to offset the costs of Katrina and, yep, my friends, right at the top is “Amtrak subsidies”. Anyone else tired of hearing how we’re going to balance the budget and solve the world’s woes by cutting aid to our ailing passenger train system?

And I’m willing to bet that there’s no mention of cutting subsidies to oil companies to encourage them to look for more oil deposits.

They discussed the Fed’s looking to trim for the relief $$ and our Congressmen recommened the transportation bill be held off for one year. I somewhat agree, there is an awful lot of pork in the bill. I can see keeping major hiway infastructure, and by all means leave AMTRAK in, I think these storms are proof of a need for any rail/passenger network, though they can cut that little part of the rail to trails, and the pork bridge and parks stuff…
