RMax,
Your query doesn’t explicitly mention whether or not you’ve already tried a search at the Index of Magazines at this site, or at the fallen flags site:
http://rr-fallenflags.org/misc-m/misc-m.html
or at the Katy historical society site:
http://www.katyrailroad.org/
Have you ?

Yep tried all those with no luck. All I can find is partial roof(back) and views from the ground. I’ve been looking for a paint chart. I may need to send a note to the historical society and ask.
Thanks for the ideas.

RMAx,
Sorry if my first response seemed brusque. There is an article, “Katy’s colorful EMD units,” by Jeff Wilson in the August 1996 issue of Model Railroader pages 80-84 with color drawings by Phil Kirchmeier. Unfortunately, the sub title is "Color renderings of freight and passenger diesels in the red, gray and yellow scheme (underlining mine). The article includes color recomendations for the various paint brands. Also, there are no overhead photographs in that article. The article does mention various books published in 1994 and earlier. The historical society may well be your best bet, unless a KATY fan responds.

Thanks Bob I’ll for those and read them too! I bought a bunch of dummioes and shells and started to work on them. The part that puzzles me is the red area above the front windows. It looks to be about a foot wide but I can’t tell exactly whats up there. Some good arial shots or a color chart should solve the problem. Since I’ve only seen KATY locos from the ground I’m clueless.

Ray George’s book Missouri-Kansas-Texas Lines in Color has plenty of photos of the various E and F units in the Deramus red/black paint scheme. Page 63 shows a couple of FP-7’s on Tx Spec. Roof is solid black from rear to a location approximately even with the top front corner of the side window, and then straight across to the other side. Originally, rest of carbody was red (darker than the previous Duco red), including the shrouding over the fuel tank. Fuel tanks and trucks black. About 1961, the pilots got painted black, too. Barriger modifications: new Katy shield, everything black below the bottom of the carbody. The Alcos were slightly different.
Check the book out if this is insufficient.

Thank you that is exactly what i am looking for. I wanted to make sure there was no strange widows peak thing up there. The straight black line is weird in itself… I just don’t see why they just didn’t paint the whole roof black. At least a straight line is really easy.

Yes but the FA’s (orig or re-engined) were not straight lines, if you’re doing them. If you like Katy units, by the way, you’ll like that book.
