Larry Kaufman’s article in Trains is off base and was set straight by BLE International President Don Hahs. But in continued Railroad corporation pandering, Trains mag ran this article dispite having Kaufman’s errors pointed out and his lack of first hand knowledge exposed.
Here is BLE International Presidents response to the article which was first published in “The Rail Business newsletter”. Seems Trains cannot even get orginal articals anymore.

Dear Mr. Kaufman:
In your editorial regarding the January 10 remote control arbitration ruling issued by Gil Vernon, written for Rail Business and reproduced on the UTU website on February 7, you wrote: “Don’t be surprised if the decision leads to renewed merger talks between the (BLE and UTU).”
Mr. Kaufman, I would be extremely surprised if such talks were to resume.
On December 10, 2001, an overwhelming majority of Locomotive Engineers voted not to merge with the United Transportation Union. The actual vote was 7,425 for and 17,251 against merging. Leaders of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers accepted that decision and moved on to pursue other options. However, leaders of the United Transportation Union and members of the industry press have recently published editorials indicating that BLE should once again revisit a merger with the UTU. Please be advised that the BLE membership has not indicated any interest in revisiting discussions with UTU.
For nearly a year now, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers has been involved in merger discussions with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Because of these discussions, and the completely one-sided vote against merging with the UTU in December of 2001, it is highly unlikely that we would ever resume merger discussions with a non-AFL-CIO affiliate such as the UTU.

When I read Kaufman’s article I could tell he didn’t have a clue what he was writing about. There will never be a merger between the BLE and the UTU.
I cant see why a man would pay the utu dues for them doing away with their jobs. but if they want to continue to pay them dues to lose there jobs they will get what the pay for
I don’t know. I have read both the BLE and UTU web pages alomost daily for about two years (I know, I am supposed to be working) and I think that the BLE made a MAJOR tactical error on the RC issue. An engineer on the ground with a RC pack is still an engineer, paying BLE dues. To oppose any discussion of RC was to open the way for the UTU members to step in and take their places- concern for safety is a red herring- otherwise locos manned by BLE humans would never run a red, collide in th yards or all the other things that happen every day, with or without persons at the controls or on the ground. The Canadian experience shows the safety possibilities, and as with any technology it will get better and safer over time.
The BLE as an orgaization may have sacrificed many of their members jobs in their desire the stay in the cab (and collecting dues) and not face the future- a little like fireman on diesels for 40 years. Sad.
you forget…the UTU had and still holds the contract for firemen, i know thier arnt any “firemen” out there anymore, but many of the older engineers also have firemens rights… and the UTU holds any firemens agreements with carriers…not the BLE…
raphm, you are dreaming if you think the UTU or the carriers ever made a serious offer to the BLE to negotiate a position on the ground for an engineer. If you believe what the CN tells you you are also very foolish. After all a CN subsidiary manufactures the Canac equipment. The equipment they put on the locomotives, in the yard I work in, is less than a year old. Hardly a week goes by that a remote locomotive doesn’t shoot craps. The funny thing is they will continue to use the locomotive in manual mode. My belief is it can only get worse.
