i like the new 148 whisker but i love the included coupler box.i like this box much better than the old #5 box .these 148 boxes snap together.it’s nice not having to glue the two halves together.will have to get ahold of kd and see if these boxes are available seperately.terry…
Yes, the boxes are available separately, the #242. Here’s a link:

I haven’t tried them yet, but they do sound like a great idea.

thanks for the link mike.the # five centering spring fits these boxes much better than the original #5 box imo.seems like the couplers work better.terry…
The Kadee #148 Whisker couplers are definitely superior to the #5 . I hope they come out with versions to replace their other types with raised or lowered heads and different shank lengths.
Because everything I have used them on so far already has a built-in coupler box, I have been throwing away the ones that come with the couplers. If I had realized that they are different and someone might actually want them, I would have saved them.
i like the 148’s also charles.i too hope they come out with different versions as you mentioned.the kd #5 couplers i have used since the mid 60’s work great but i always had problem with the bronze centering spring not keeping the coupler completely centered.the 242 box(whisker coupler box) does an excellent job of keeping a #5 coupler centered.i have six cars with regular #5 but have them inserted in the 242 box and they work extremely well.no problems with the couplers being off centered and they work great with the delayed between the rails uncoupler magnet.these six cars are going on the fifth month of operation and they operate flawlessly.i’ll still buy the whiskers and use them but i have a ton of regular #5 that im going to install in the 242 box along with the bronze centering spring.terry…
I like the #148 allso,and I’am re-placeing the #5 s,the box is great,so I save all of them.

The 148’s are wonderful as far as my experience goes with them. I asked Kadee to get them into their entire line offset heads, long, short etc. They operate so well I may very well replace all the old 5’s also.
