Ken Kidder 2-6-2T

There is a Ken Kidder on Ebay, and I have got ideas about buying it, as it would make a nice addition to my fleet. What do you think?

Ok, you just told the whole world. Have fun bidding.

You could have just asked what people think of a Ken Kidder 2-6-2T? You have a chance to buy one from a private source.

NO, what do you think about the model, not the auction![:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!]

I think you should step away from your keyboard, sit down and think about what you want to do, instead of asking vague questions about what everybody else “thinks about” this and that and the third thing and the fourth thing and …, while you are flitting here and there and everywhere through all kinds of scales and locomotives and what not.

Ken Kidder brass imports from the 60’s were very cheap models that had poor running qualities for the most part. IIRC, the 'Porter 2-6-0 was one of the few that actually was a model of a US prototype. Most of their small steamers were either ‘freelance’ or Japanese prototypes. One like you saw on eBay sold for around $25-30 back in the 60’s.

I think steinjr has the right idea - take a break and re-think you game plan…

Only you would know how well it would fit into your fleet. What is the intended assignment and the layou’ts motif?

Ken Kidder drives were crude (gearing and motors). I’d be surprised if it was capable of slow, smooth movement. You could spend more money upgrading the drive than acquiring the basic model.

Okay, I get it, Ken Kidder garbage, forget this thread.

[^o)] Mmmmmm…Somehow I don’t believe you do. Heed the advice already given you by others and step back and figure out what you really want to focus your efforts on. Otherwise, you’re going to be spending money needlessly and not accomplishing anything.

The Ken Kidder Porter Mogul had an American-BUILT prototype - but the model was/is HOj (1:80 scale) and the prototype was built for and used on a Japanese railroad. One, Benkei, has been preserved.

IIRC, the Ken Kidder 2-6-2T was a Kawai-built foobie - similar to, but not an exact model of, numerous American and Japanese built 2-6-2Ts used on Japanese short lines.

I am sorry for this, but I can not help it. I am still young and I have an extremely busy mind. If you were to have a canversation in real life with me, you’d notice that I can’t stay on one subject. But, I am slowly fixing on what I like best, but I don’t have enough knowledge, I’ve read all the books in the public library system on trains, and I only have two friends to bother about trains(whom I am only allowed to occasionally bug) There are tons of people on this forum that I can gladly ask my questions to, and I am sorry if I am a pest. I just need other peoples help t fend the info I need to settle into a certain theme/mode. Also I have spent no money so far, as I am going to find out what I like best first. END OF STORY!

Oops, sorry to post it twice, our internet got reset while posting it.[banghead]

That’s the primary problem right there. You seem to think you can find out what you like best by asking other people their opinions on a whole range of subjects. It’s a recipe for failure because:

  1. People are going to get tired of answering questions that are all over the map and bear very little to no repationship to each other.

  2. As a result of #1, people are just going to quit answering your questions.

  3. You’ll never really ever find out what you like best until you actually make some kind of commitment and make some mistakes in the process. If you don’t do that, you’re going end up in a continual state of what is known as “analysis paralysis” where you’re so tied up in trying to figure out what’s best that you never actually do anything.

Here is a novel idea for you: there is something on the Internet known as google. It is a seach engine that allows you to find web pages about various subjects.

It will allow you to look up a lot of information on your own. You go to http://www.google.com and enter search terms, trying out various words for search terms to find things. Then you click into many pages and read the information they contain, look for links etc.

You can change your mind over and over and over again, without annoying anyone else about the time they “wasted” in trying to answer questions which you never seriously considered, since you had moved on to a new subject before they were done answering your first question.

Next you consider this : you probably have no experience with model railroading and little money. You (as everybody else who starts a new hobby) need to learn to walk before you run and leap over tall buildings in a single jump.

Start simple. You are not going to build a huge empire with “a fleet” of locomotives as your firs

FORGET THIS THREAD! I AM GOING TO BUY A RAG TAG FLEET FROM SOME LOCAL GUYS, SO THAT I CAN FIGURE OUT HOW GOOD IT IS WITH OUT YOU GUYS! NOW I SHALL LEAVE YOU GUYS ALONE FOR A LONG TIME!

[%-)]…Why am I not surprised?

Send me a PM (see "Conversations in the right-hand column by your avatar). I’ll be happy to be the guy you bug for questions - I’m retired, and not a lot to do…

My goodness, did tempers rise in this thread quickly![:|] I’ve used Google a lot, and it most certainly does not come up with everything you need to know. That’s what forums like this are for. So people can share experience, hopefully in a civilized manner.

I don’t have any Kidder brass of my own, but I’ve seen plenty. The designs are some of the simplest of all, and the gear ratio would give steam a little too much speed. They probably need tinkering and even a new motor to run really well. I don’t know how much experience you have with trains yet, but if you’re a beginner, I would suggest you to look for something from MDC/Roundhouse or Tyco/Mantua first. They’re cheaper, easy to work on, and usually run well. Bachmann also has a 2-6-2, but I haven’t heard good things on its reliability. Or, if you really want something brass, maybe look for a small older steam engine from someone like Akane or Tenshodo. I just got a small Akane 2-8-0 last week, and not only is it easy to work on, but it runs great!

If you’re still hanging around the forums, I hope this helped a little.

One should not leap to conclusions.

The OP has gotten quite a few reasonable suggestions for his questions. But he has also been getting stronger and stronger hints for quite a while that it was getting to the point where quite a few otherwise reasonable, calm and helpful people (like Fred Wright and Doctor Wayne) was getting exasperated with his behavior.

Nobody has told him that he can find “everything he will need to know” by using google. But it will allow him to ask random questions and explore options as the fancy strikes him, and abandon his train of thoughts to hare off in some other direction several times a day without annoying people who feels that the information they spent time on sharing with him was pretty just ignored.

And then, when he knows more about what he wants to do, he can come back and ask some more directed questions about how to do things.
