ive haead that Keystone made a 44 ton HO locomotive. is this true? if so, are keystone models good quality?(smooth running, quiet, detailed…) can they be run with DCC?
Thanx in advance.

modeling the new haven in 4x8
im bored…
I once had 2 of these, yes it’s true… They were cast metal and brass kits that came with a pre-assembled drive train using a Sagami can motor… I never actually completed either of them and sold them off long ago. However, the mechanisms ran fine and were readily adaptable to DCC. The PROBLEM with them was, the axles are held on with U shaped clips made of some inferior plastic (styrene I think), that should have been one of the engineering plastics (delrin for example) and they all broke. I was able to cast more of them using the one remaining in tact one for a pattern but at a retail of $80 (then) it shouldn’t have happened in the first place… If you find one on ebay or at a show, be sure to look at or ask about the axle retaining clips.

hey there gearhead. the walthers catalog has them listed as being unpowered. i’ve contemplated buying one and geting a NWSL motor for it, but it’s not high on my railroading priority list. i hope this helps.
The Keystone 44 ton is a good running model. Skill level is above shake the box but lower than craftman. I beleive the running gear was supplied by North West Short Line. They may have a solution to the axle clip. Just checked mine and 6 of the 8 clips are missing. The wheels don’t fall of when I pick it up, have to look into that.
thanx all this helps, i will post any future questions.
feel free to add to this fourm after this, tho. i wont be uying much for my RR for a while, but i just need all the info i can get, so the next layouty comes out perfect.
