Kingston Model RR Club Eviction

Hi everyone: We made our annual trek to Kingston, NY to ride a Santa Train and to visit the annual open house of the Kingston Model RR Club. This club has been together since the 1930’s and has a large, lovely “O” Scale layout in a former NYC plumbing shop located along the CSX River Line—former NYC West Shore Line. Upon arrival we were saddened to learn that this is probably the groups last show. The people who own the building have served them an eviction notice and wants them out by Jan 1st, 2012 (next month). I don’t know the details of what caused the eviction notice.

Anyone who has had to dismantle a layout, especially one that has been developing over many years, knows it is a sad experience. I wish the group from Kingston the best and to all of you out there, do not take anything for granted. It was a pretty weekend here and that’s why we headed out for a day trip. It turned out to be the last weekend of their show and probably the last time we will ever get to see their layout. Take a ride and support your local model railroad clubs. I wish Happy Holidays to everyone.

Always a saddening when a model railroad club comes to an end; especially in a situation like this. 74 years in the same building?! So this club came into existence around the same time period as the birth of the diesel streamliner and before WWII. Looks like such a long history doesn’t mean much in the 21st century. .

This sad story drives home a very sharp point. For a business, club, or social group, your future is always cloudy if you don’t own the building! This is even more important today, when many companies care little for history, public opinion or what is morally right. After all, it’s their property and if you don’t fit their plans, your out! I hope the club can find a new home and try for another 74 years.

It appears there has been a clause every prior deed in the chain allowing the club to use the building in perpetuity for a very reasonable sum.

This clause conveniently disappeared in the latest transfer. And the new landload has been raising the rent. Property rights do not disappear by unilaterally removing a clause from a deed in NYS. The club is currently in court trying to save themselves. Hopefully the judge is versed in property law (some are not) and will make a good decision for the club.

I am not a member but have friends who are. Good speed and good karma guys!

PS: It might help to contact the landlord and voice some opinions. ’ couldn’t hurt. Contact info on other thread.

Aparently the Kingston club has been paying the higher rent for some time, which may negate the clause in their original agreement.
