Kit bashing "The General"

I am planning to kit bash a 30 year old kit that I picked up the other day for the price of the shipping.Has anyone here ever built this kit in the past ? What was your experience with it ?This is not a working locomotive but would make a nice static addition to a layout. What do you think ? Cheers! John.

.

I actually have two of these kits, the older MPG version and the newer AMT.The kits are basically the same but the earlier versions detail may be crisper,I will first build the older version. This will be a static model but would make a nice addition to a layout as an engine undergoing repair etc…Being as old as it is I could think of a hundred ways that it could even be worked into a modern layout, as a museum piece or in a park etc…

I saw a version of this kit that had been kitbashed to look utterly rusted and abandoned. Very atmospheric but perhaps not the best possible use of the klt. One interesting kitbash would be to try to backdate the General to actually look as it did at the time of the Andrews Raid versus the current condition of the locomotive which more or less is post Civil War in condition.

Sounds like a great idea! Dave.

Being a newcomer to railroad modeling I figure that the best way to learn is by building a locomotive to learn all the basic terminology first ,so that I know what you guys are referring to in your posts and just go from there.

This is as far as the previous owner got.It seems that he broke an axle and quit. The glue is old so it should come apart quite easily.

Talk about maddening!

KITBASHING WHAT?

This kit is not a good starting point if a Big Boy is what you have in mind!

I might have found a source for this loco without tender for $12.95, $4.00 for shipping… I sent you a PM.

Rich

Thank you Rich ! that is very kind of you.

This is the 30 year old kit that I am building.Looks like loads of fun !

I built this kit years ago as a kid - it’s the same scale as popular plastic auto kits - way too large for most layouts, unless you’re doing narrow-gauge LGB stuff indoors.

I think it was a gift, and as a snot-nosed kid I wasn’t too excited about it, but I have a vague memory of being fairly pleased with how the model went together.

I think parts of it may exist in boxes of disintegrating models somewhere.

Eric

Hi Eric ! I build large stuff for museums so size is not a problem.I use these kits as a good starting point using them as a shell for detailing static models in dioramas.Nice to hear from you. Cheers! John.

This is the locomotives cab.Lots of good detail to work with here. A lot of what you see here will be replaced with wood and brass fittings. What these models provide for me is a good starting point and reference .The model manufacturer went to a lot of trouble to research all this stuff so it saves me a lot of time.Any inaccuracies I chalk up to artistic license and let it go at that.In my world all things are possible!

My dad built one of these back in the 70’s. Still has it on display in a homemade display case in his living room. Very nice kit.

Cool ! any chance of getting a picture ? Thanks. Cheers ! John,

Kitbash the General?

I have been kitbashing a '70’s vintage Mantua RTR General into a Wooten fireboxed Inspection Locomotive. I’ve been using photos of the Reading Company #100 and Lehigh Valley #1 Inspection Locos for guidance as I am free lancing this little guy. I recently unpacked it after yet another move … hopefully the last for a few years. Now I can get back to work on it.

This is not a great photo, but it should give you the basic idea …

There’s still a long way to go!

EDIT: This is odd … the photo shows up in edit mode and in preview, but not when I post … But it is definately still at Photobucket … and it hasn’t been moved! What’s going on?

I’ll try posting this photo the next time I post something to this thread.

Is the album the photo is in set to “public” in Photobucket?
