Kit built brass N3 locomotive

Hello fellow forumites! I’m starting a new project; the brass kit mfg HNJ’s steam locomotive class N3!

This is the contents of the kit:

Seems to me to be a good kit!

This is the progress so far. The gearbox was a bit fiddly to get smooth, but after some fine adjusting, it is super nice!

The boiler is made from thick brass tubes and cast brass pieces. It was a job for the propane torch! Just going to add the smoke box overlay and the boiler bands before detailing it.

The tender chassis is very nicely designed and went together true and square without any trouble. The goal is to complete this loco in 50 hours.

I’m only 3.5 hours in the project so far…

Gidday Graffen, I am presuming that the N3 is a “Standard gauge” locomotive.

I have visited the HNJ Verkstad web site but am not sure what scale the kit is. Is it 3.5mm / ft or 4mm/ ft?

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers the Bear.

Yes, it’s a standard gauge locomotive in 1:87 scale (3.5 mm/foot).

To those who wonder about the lack of valve gear and cylinders; it’s an inner cylinder engine!

The gear that is on the second axle is for the lubricator.

Some news.

To clarify, it is HO scale, but the loco class is named N3.

The fasteners for the walkway:

A bit tricky design as it’s so tight between the parts.

It would have been disappointing if the moving parts became solid…

I used some wet tissue paper to keep the parts separated.

The instructions (in English non the less), says to use alu foil.

But I have experienced that the solder can creep along it by capillary action when using it…

The other side…

The inner core for the cab soldered in place along with the floor.

The roof beams in place.

I built the water fill hatch and attached two tool boxes on the deck. <

The result of altering the tender wall!

This would be a very enjoyable kit for me. If only there were American steam loco kits like these.

Keep up the good work.

Graffen: I really enjoyed the thread on the last loco you built… I’m looking forward to more on this one.

Mike

Thanks!

I wish there would be more US prototype brass kits as well…

Here are my points to why there should be.

A: there is no big price saving to build yourself, but the pure enjoyment is so worth it!

B: There must be a place even in the US for this side of the hobby?

I have started the build of the chassis, and it is so much fun!

It is totally equalized and has lots of balancing beams and rockers.

The crank rods are articulated in the right places as well! Instead of using the wheel taps to join the rods, they are riveted in the original place.

Pics to come…

Thats A W E S O M E ! ! !

Hi all, I have not been able to post any pics of the build thanks to a faulty camera… This is how far I’ve come though: A bit more to do. I’ve managed to get the fully compensated chassis to work very good. I made the power pick ups from bronze strips soldered to vero-board that I attached to the underside of the chassis. I’m waiting for some parts to arrive before finishing it. I’ll start the second build in the mean time…

Gidday Graffen, [tup]

…second build…??? Another brass kit???

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,the Bear.

Well, yes! I started the build yesterday… A brass Swedish 0-8-2 tank engine! Will be fun as well!

With all the laser cutters out there today, it sure would be nice if someone were to offer a laser or etched brass kit of a steam loco here in the U.S.
