I have a car that the coupler wont work. To replace it do I just pull it out with some pliers?
Impossible to say for sure without more info but probably not. What scale, type and maker of car> Body mounted or truck mounted coupler? Most likely the hidden end of the coupler shank is in some sort of box. Some have metal covers to pry off from the side with a small screw driver. Some have screws holding them together. Others …
NO!!!
More information is required before more meaningful advise can be given!!!
Why doesn’t the coupler work? Is it a height issue ? Is the knuckle spring in place? Does it have move freely in the coupler box?
What brand of coupler?
What brand of car?
Cheers, the Bear. [:)]
No Pliers as well. Perhaps you could post a couple of pictures of the problem coupler so we can all better advise you.
Its just an out of the set box car…Thunder Valley Set…plastic…there was a bag of coupler included in the set
N Scale to by the way…
Still not enough info.
First there are several “Thunder Valley Set(s)” by various manufacturers in several different scales.
Answer ALL of Bear’s questions plus I still think a pic might help you get the right advise
Bachmann, N Scale.
Yes but there is an older Life Like HO and a current Lionel O.
This is a Bachman N Scale set…the couplers in the bag are bigger. Look like HO scale. Bought the set used.
I got the coupler off. A small screw is fastening down a plate covering the “plastic wings” at the base of the coupler. They look ok. The car is almost impossible to hook to other cars and will not say hooked…Coupler is so small a picture comes out fuzzy.
I looked at the post before your previous one. He said N Scale. The only N Scale one was made by Bachmann.
My Bad Jeffery, that post happened while I was posting so I missed it.
So Daff, Do I have this straight? The extra couplers that you found in the bag are different than the coupler that wasn’t working on the car. And beside size what are the other differences?
Here is a web site for good N scale replacement couplers.
The couplers on the car are almost half the size of the ones in the bag. My guess is since this is a used set someone just threw those in the box (ebay purchase). They are also more square at the coupling end.
I got it apart and it looks like those little wings that act as springs have lost most of their “spring”. So I think I just need to get me some more couplers.
Now I have a theory.
If a car is continuously run in a circle clockwise or counterclockwise, over time the “springs” on that side of the coupler will lose its ability to pull the coupler back square thus making it harder to hook when backing up to it with a locomotive or other cars.
Now that is some deep thought isn’t it?
Thanks for all the help.
Thanks for the link.
I went browsing around the site and see they are coming out with 150 yr comm. Civil War sets. “The General” used to be housed here in Chattanooga until the State of Ga sued and won custody of her and I as a child actually got to ride the ole gal. It is now on display in Kenesaw, Ga. just out side of Atlanta.
May just have to fork over some cash and get me on of those.
Hi Daff,
I think you will find that the Mirco Trains couplers will be more durable. Plus if it matters to you all their stuff is made in the US
