l.i.p.

Layout in progress,

The surprising part of this story is, the K4 is gone from the curve and a Geep is in its place. As the world turns! Maybe the K4 will be back next year from the rebuild.

Actually K4 1361 is at Steamtown undergoing an overhaul with the idea of running it. I beileve that was mentioned in this month’s Trains article on Steamtown.

My grandfather photo’d ‘scrap’ trains on the WM in 1953-54. His photos look exactly like the sound of cactusjawa’s quote except it’s at Helmstetter’s curve.

Although the 1950’s were another time and alot of different forces were driving the decisions to get rid of the old equipment, I guess no one imagined steam would be so completely’ gone’ by now.

All the museums and Railfans refuse to let it die, and even tho their small, new 6 coupled locos are being made for the small museum lines and public attraction areas running real steam.
The old steamers are…getting old.

According to one of the Rangers at Steamtown last fall, all existing steam locos in the US whether running or not are now part of the Historic Register and are protected as part of our heritage. It is against federal statutes now to destroy or scrap a steam loco (at least the old ones). Even parts from engines are protected. So, hopefully the steam that is still out there will be preseved for many generations to come!

Don’t give me none of your l.i.p.!..

What happened to the original topic and the picture of the K4’s going to the scrap yard? Dave
