Hi Shaun

The nose was yellow. On the long hood the letters L & N were yellow. Under the cab window sometimes the L & N was yellow with a red rectangle around the letters but sometimes no red rectangle just the yellow letters. Some locos put the loco’s numbers under the window with the red rectangle and yellow L & N on the nose. On some units the red rectangle with yellow L & N was also seen on the rear end of the locomotive just under the white class lights.

Locomutt and Louis Nash are two who can add to this and maybe even post some good photos.

Here are a few photos that might be of help to you Shaun.

Shaun

I forgot [:(] .

The yellow on the nose went only to the top of the forward edge then the very top was gray. On the hi hood units the same thing applied. I was told that some L & N units were yellow on the rear end, however, I have not seen any photos where this was the case. It could be, as some railroads varried their loco painting from time to time.

Shaun,

I believe Jim is as correct as he can be;those pictures should be as
good a guide as you can get.

I can’t seem to find any pictures GP-40s,etc,but do know that I have
some of the ALCO RS units. Think I’ve even got a pic. of an ALCO FA.

The quality of some of my pics. are not very good,and one or two are B & W;
If you are interested, send me an email with your email address, and if you
wish, I will attempt to send you a few pics.
(most of those pics. were taken in the late '60s.)

Shaun,
Jim pretty much hit the nail on the head for you.

I went through one of my L&N books here at the house to look up the particular loco you linked to. That GP-40 you put on here was built in 7-63 and was originally L&N 1036.

The photo that is in my book of a GP-40 has everything Jim noted. The L&N is in yellow on the nose in the red rectangle as well as it having the same L&N herald just under the cab window. The loco number is in the middle of the loco in yellow and with an all yellow L&N painted near the end of the unit.

The GP-30’s have basically the same paint scheme as the GP-40’s. The GP-30’s were the first “new” engines for L&N to be painted in the gray-yellow scheme. The only difference with the GP-30 delivered units I noticed were they did not have the L&N herald on the nose of the unit.

The first unit to go in the gray-yellow paint scheme was GP18 #460. I have noticed that the GP-38’s and the GP-35’s did not have the L&N herald under the cab windows, but the loco number and the L&N herald was painted in the middle of the loco. It did have the L&N herald on the nose in the red rectangle.

Here is a little info. with the two links that Jim posted:

The GP-30 L&N 1006 was built in 8-62 and eventually became SBD 1305. The GP-30 L&N 1036 was built in 7-63 and eventually became SBD 1367.

I am sure that there were different variations of paint schemes that could have been on many locos. Some of the L&N facilities were capable of repainting when maintenance was being performed also. I know that South Louisville Shops had a pretty good size shop area.

As for L&N loco photos, I am just to young to have photographed any. I sure wished I could have. Being born in 1973, the L&N was getting late in her years. Family Lines paint was taking over, but I do remember well the gray-yellow paint of the L&N, just was not into taking photos then. Was more interested in being a kid and seeing the trains
