Nothing against the museum. But why can’t a museum fund its own roof repairs? The answer is big government. Non-profit organizations are very limited on the amount of money they can set aside for these things. This makes them a dependent of big government. Or, another welfare recipient. I believe they really don’t want to be a welfare recipient, but big government tax law gives them no choice. The alternative is to get taxed out of existence.
What is the first goal of big government. To ensure its survival. By making museums dependent on big government, the big government can turn around and use this as proof that more big government is required.
The next time you complain that your fuel taxes are too high, the roads are in need of repair, and you can’t figure out where all the money goes, remember projects like this one and other places where big government has no business providing welfare funding by using the highway funds.

I totally agree with Mr. Guse. It’s incredible to think that money that should be used to repair national highway infrastructure is being used to repair the roof at a museum. Federal funds should not be used in this manner. If the people of the city of Duluth and the state of Minnesota want to use their money then that is fine but Federal funds should be used for projects in the national interest. We have personal welfare, corporate welfare and now nonprofit welfare.
all this comment about diversion of hghway ‘taxes’ is balderdash. the so-called ‘gas tax’ is not a tax at all; it’s a highway user fee! how much does the average highway pay towards property tax; or waste disposal, or ANYTHING besides hiway construction or repair? Zilch - nada -zero! if limited-access hiways were privatized, taxed, and tolled, a LOT of the deficit would disappear, and without the subsidy, more people would ride transit.
I commend the city of Duluth, and Minnesota in general, for supporting this museum. It is a great place to visit. I have visited several times in the past 6 years, and the new lighting will help tremendously.
Congratulations!
