Lakeside Lines

I just finished reading the Lakeside Lines article in the November 2010 issue of MR.

I found it a very enjoyable article on a layout type that one doesn’t see on large layouts. The layout is 24 x 40 feet but is just one location designed to run prototypically long trains The layout also has a large amount of staging to support operations.

Thanks to MR for covering a different type of layout.

Enjoy

Yes I agree, great article on that layout.

Really nice to see some modeling of unit trains. The layout is big, but the scene with the prototypical long coal train was well done.

We need to see more types of these layouts featured in MRR.

Paul,

I think I stated it before, but this layout comes close to what I would call my personal dream layout. This one´s made for running BIG engines!

If you haven’t already, check out his website on the layout (http://www.lakesidelines.com/). There are a lot of photos and even videos of the layout.

It’s a very impressive layout, but I must admit I don’t know that I have the mentality of train-turnover to keep it fresh. Beyond the yards, there’s not much to do. I’m kinda of the opinion that for my own interests, having a few more small mountain industries wouldn’t be a bad thing. Though, I’m betting he could run a circus trian in his sleep on that layout.

There are a lot of different interests in running layouts. Some build toward operations, some go for the scenery. I admi, I love long trains and that is a hard thing to model. I love the fact he jumped in and imbraced it. While some may think it doesnt have much operational potential, but I think it has a lot to offer in the sense of pushers and multi powered head ends. Not something you get a chance to do.

I just visited the web site and must say I am impressed. I would be happy to visit the Rail Road in person.

Given what it is that he wanted most out of a model railroad, he did a superb job of designing the track plan to fit his givens and druthers. In some ways the MR article would have been just as suited to Model Railroad Planning because it illustrates the sequence: thinking hard about the utlimate goals, designing the track plan accordingly, doing a wonderful job in constructing the layout and the models, and then proving the concept with actual operations. Few of us would have the discipline given that space! My own ideal layout notions differ but the modeling itself is excellent and the achievement of the goal is admirable. This guy can resist temptation, at least of the model railroading variety. [}:)]

I don’t much do forums, but I just ran into all this discussion about the railroad while checking on the lakesidelines.com website. I appreciate all the kind words. Don’t know where you live, but visitors are always welcome, just go to the website and drop me a line if you are any where close. You can also find out about opprotunities to join in operating sessions there.

The long trains are a lot of fun, but my operators have found handeling the full size trains in the yard to be some of the most challenging and realistic operations they have encountered. The layout employees 7 operators at a time.
