I am doing a layout set in Winter.
The best trees I have ever seen are by Lance Mindheim on his Monon layout. Does anyone know what he makes them out of?

I don’t know if he’s on this forum, but I asked him as he is a member of another forum that I’m on. He said that he uses a lot of Supertrees from Scenic Express. He says he paints the armature with gray auto primer and dusts on some flat black and flat dark brown. I also asked him about the fallen leaves and he says he uses saw dust painted brown. Like you, I think he’s got about the most realistic scenery for that time of year and that part of the country.

Thanks alot for asking him.
Now all I have to do is go home and practice, practice, practice to see if I can get anything close.

Yes practice, paractice, practice works! If you find and develop some techniques, take pictures and share. Plywood central needs to be stamped out. Jon Grant on the “RailRoad Forum” has a miniclinic on winter trees that can be covered with ground foam to simulate any season. Look in the “midscale” section of the forum.

The meandering creek that Lance Mindheim has on his Monon layout might be the single most realistic scene I have ever seen in any model railroad magazine, ever. He has captured the look of the creek banks perfectly.
Interesting that he uses painted sawdust. That was a hobby basic technique even back in the 1930s that you do not hear about much anymore.
