laquer and enamel paint question

Ok guys and gals. I remember from way back when something about not being able to spray one on top of the other. I am going to spray and enamel paint primer then paint with a laquer then clear with an enamel. Am I asking for orange peal problems here or is it going to be ok to do.

Thanks

Mike

Why not use a lacquer-based primer? I’m not sure, but I think that you can apply enamel over lacquer, but not vice-versa, although I’ve had good success thinning some enamels with lacquer thinner.

You can paint enamel over lacquer with no issues. Painting lacquer over enamel can run the risk of lifting the paint, turning it into a cottage cheese looking mess. Best way to avoid it is to plan for it, and use the correct line of products.

Thanks guys. I thought it was you could paint enamel over laquer but I could not remember. I will go out and get some laquer primer before painting the top coat. I am building a 50 chevy 3100 for my dad. I could go to finescale website but I am not a member and knew this website would find the answer quick.

1:1 scale? It’s a big difference between what sits on a layout and what runs down the road. Not many RRers are concerned about hardeners, catalysts, or flex-additives on an HO scale whatever.

DON’T mix types of paing. If you put lacquer with enamel there’s going to be a “paint fight”. The lacquer will attack the enamel.

My advice is to use one type of paint for the whole job. Personally I use Floquil lacquer based paint or Scalecoat2.

For the finish I use Testore Dullcote or Glosscote thinned with Scalecoat2 Thinner.

Thanks again. I am building a 1/24 scale chevy for my dad. I model both trains and cars… I was going to ask on finescale modeler but was already a member here and knew you all had the answers.

I would watch the Floquil, I think that the recent Floquil paints are now enamel rather than the lacquer that they used to be. They certainly apply differently and dry differently than the old lacquer based Floquil I still have in stock.

Because of this I am switching to Scalecoat II for all my plastics painting.
