Hi,
Anyone know where the largest PM timber trestle was? And/or largest C&O timber trestle? in the 1940’s - 1950’s era?
Hi,

I can’t say it was the largest, but its a good size and is still in use. It’s at Hamilton on the Allegan branch.
Neato thanks much I’ll check it out!
Are you talking about Hamilton Michigan, Rabbit RIver?
The two largest trestles of any type on the PM were the steel trestle over the Manistee River between Baldwin and Kaleva, and the steel trestle on the west side of St. Thomas, Ontario. The Manistee River “High Bridge” was dismantled in the 1950s. The bridge in St. Thomas lasted until the laste 1980s or early 1990s.
Cliff Vander Yacht wrote up an article on the construction and dismantling of the Manistee River bridge. I hope to use it in an upcoming issue of the PMHS’s “PM Rails”, once I get some better copies of photos for it.
Yes
That’s a really cool trestle!
OK so, what trestle on either the C & O system, or the Pere Marquette system, was the most dramatic, i.e., the tallest…at any time in either system’s history…
Here is a Pere Marquette yahoo group you could join. Reporedly, there are 196 members but the postings don’t seem to be that frequent.
