Last of the green subway trains?

I spotted the Proto R17/22 subway train sets, the green ones with end gate details included, in the Trainworld ad in this month’s MR. I checked Walthers, and they’ve sold them out. The good news is that Trainworld has them for under a hundred dollars (well, 1 penny under, anyway) and they originally went for 180-something.

I told myself that I’d get a set if I ever saw them on a blowout sale, so I made good on my promise. If I know Trainworld, they’re already sitting on the dock waiting for Brown to get them, and I’ll have them Friday afternoon.

So, if you’re a subway modeller, or you’re thinking of getting a set, this might be your last chance.

I got the red ones, but only to test out my CTA layout which will have correct CTA cars, now I have 3 to build. I got the 4 car set, one powered rest dummies. Its interesting the dummies are exactly as the powered minus the required stuff to “power” them, they are still lit with interior and directional headlights.

I have to stray and tell you that I’m in awe of your subway (that’s “Tube” for our English members) [;)] and when I saw your name and the thread title saying “Last Of…” I said to myself, Oh No!

Whew, glad to hear that your underground is still operating.

Thanks for the kind words. I’ve been considering ways to expand the “tube” network, now that my fleet will grow in size. I’m thinking of using PVC pipe for a tunnel, cut in half lengthwise so I can lay track and some minimal scenery, and then replace the top for a complete circular tube.

WOW when I first saw this i thought "Oh No Mr.B had a cave in "

Glad to see i was wrong !

Mr. B.

Looking forward to seeing the expansion of your subway! BTW: I’m about half way done with my first subway station (again - thanks for the inspiration to go forward with this project). Currently tinkering with several circuitron parts and some old MRC packs to get some automatic operation. I’m also toying with the idea of using some cheapo digital voice recorders to add some sound as the trains enter and leave the station.

They’re here! Almost-instant gratification. I ordered them from Trainworld in NYC yesterday, and I’ve got them now - plain vanilla (well, Brown) shipping to outside of Boston.

I had to try them. I don’t have a decoder in yet, but that will come along shortly. (I’ve got one I pulled out of an Alco when I added sound.) This shot is in the Penny Lane station. On the other track to the right you can see one of the Redbirds. The new green ones came with the end gates - I had to add them for the older set.

Wonderful to know that you’re a NYC subway modeler. [8D][tup]

I have many fond memories of riding these very trains as a kid. Up unitl about 1971 (pre-graffitti era) most of the IRT subway trains I rode ( #2,#3,#4,#5, #6 ) had a mixture of red and green subway cars.

Funny thing for me is that for many years I actually thought that the “green” subway cars were a grayish-black! Because the exteriors were usually clean, I didn’t know that the paint on them had actually faded, severely. I didn’t find out that those cars were actually a dark green until I was about 25! [(-D]
