Once Penn Central was swallowed up how long would locos painted for PC last please?

Is there a reference please?

Generally a locomotive would be repainted into its newest paint scheme whenever it goes in for a shop period. Sorry that I can’t be more specific than that, but with PC being part of the whole ConRail thing I’d say by the mid-80s you’d have no more PC stuff.

Some PC units lasted into the 80s while some was never repainted before being retired and this requires a case study.

Conrail tried to erase any reference to the PC as soon as possible, even without full repaints they would paint over the Penn Central markings and replace them with little CR’s. Some of the loco’s that were to be retired soon were not given full repaints and remained in black with the Penn Central graphics showing through the splotchouts after a time. Jim Six did an article in Railroad Modelers about doing a SD40 in that manner.

Rails Northeast magazine did monthly updates on the repainting of previous units into Conrail markings with every issue.
