Can anyone tell me or point me to a resource that would list what a “City of Everywhere” consist looked like on the Milwaukee Road in the late 1960s just before Amtrak?
Fred Frailey’s “Twilight of the Great Trains” goes into extensive details on the consist of these trains. Head end cars are included. Diagrams show where each car was added, dropped, switched to another train, whatever. He focuses on the UP end of the run, but he does show what came in from Chicago on the Milwaukee.
It’s a great book covering UP, Santa Fe, BN, SCL and others.
I dug up my copy of that book and it’s true that Frailey lists the types of cars in the consist but doesn’t necessarily list road ownership (UP, SP, or MILW). Is there such a list out there?
I read somewhere that Frailey also wrote a book about the heritage of Amtrak’s passenger cars in the early years. I don’t recall the name of the book. I wonder if there might be some info there?
dont remember the exact year but TRAINS did a lead piece on that…i think it was entitled “City of Everywhere”…compared pre-/post- Amtrak…covered what cars went to what cities\routes…had little flow charts…was early 90’s i think…seemes i recall Denver being the big breakup/make up point…ill see if i can find it so you can get the year for the issue
