Latest Dream Plan Build "Lake Erie"

I got my Real Rails edition the other day and it was about Railroads around Lake Erie. Let me start by saying I grew up in Toledo Ohio. It is on the western end of Lake Erie. I am somewhat biased, but Toledo was an important international port and loaded/unloaded much coal and iron ore/taconite. Granted it is not as important as it once was in the railroad community, but in my opinion they should have at least mentioned it. The Lake Front Docks (NYC and B&O) as well as the Presque Isle(C&O) had large coal/iron docks. Between the two of them they probably had 7 Hulett unloaders as well as at least 7 coal dumpers. I am guessing at the numbers. They were also a major manufacturing center, and were known as the “Glass Capitol of the World.” The 20th Century Limited stopped at the last major station that the NYC built, The Toledo Union Station, opened in 1950. Thre is currently a Jeep Factory that is not layed off. I could fact check this but I am at work. I have been told that that Toledo had the second largest amount of freight movement in the USA. You would think that Toledo would merit at least a historical mention in the Video! Like I said I am biased, but it is a great place to be from, and no I do not live there any more. I live near Tacoma Washington. Other than that it is a great video.

You are way ahead of my subscription, last week I got the ‘CSX Appalachian’ vid. It was good, but I’m thinking of cancelling cuz, I have not gotten the medallions & can’t justify $25 bucks for them any more. On the other side I wish I could pick & choose what I get, but on each video there are subjects that are totally revelant to what I’m doing & I ‘need’ that. I don’t know what to do. I like them, but 6 of them are a Kato engine in cost. Geez…

Sounds like that is a serious operation that ‘should’ have been included, that would be worth seeing, especially since there are applicable kits & serious modeling interest right there.

Toledo should have been mention since its still a rail center and port city.CSX still unloads coal there.

I suppose there was no mention of Sandusky?

As an ex-Toledo resident myself, I too would object as Toledo was the third larges rail center in the United States in the 1950’s. Toledo was served by 9 major railroads, NYC, PRR, B&O, C&O, NKP, WAB, DT&!, D&TSL, and AA. These were all interchanged through the Toledo Terminal Railroad. Toledo was the largest shipper of coal through the Lakefront and Presque Isle Docks along with receiving Iron Ore that was shipped to various steel making centers.

Also Toledo was a hub of Interurban railroads including the Lake Shore Electric and the Ohio Public Service that was still operating as a freight hauler in the 60’s.
