Latest project - New headlight & ditchlight LEDs on Kato locos. (Pictures)

My latest project has been to begin replaceing the headlight LEDs in my Kato SD90s and AC4400. The ones I am using to replace them are from Miniatronics, and are called “Yellowglow”. They have a much more “real headlight” look to them than the bluei***int that the Kato factory “white” LEDs had. I have also seperated the ditchlights from the headlight. In stock form, the ditchlights had a “light pipe” that ran up to the headlight LED, and they could not be controlled independently of the headlight (when running on a DCC layout). I used the idea that I found on Digitrax’s website. Here is the page http://www.digitrax.com/ftp/dh163ip.pdf if you are interested (the ditchlight mod is near the bottom of the page). You can also set up the CVs to make the ditchlights “wig-wag” at grade crossings by pressing F2 if you are using DCC. I have set mine up that way, and it is very cool! Here are the pics. For comparison, UP 8242 has the new LEDs, while 8105 still has the factory Kato lights. (My camera still makes the lights look a little blue, but they do not look like that in person). I hope this info might help someone else that may be wanting to make this mod!

I would love to do that with my ac4400 C&NW its athearn thow .any ideas?
carl…

Very nice, I like the way it looks much better and more realistic. Do you or anyone here know if I can do that with my IHC GG1? Let me try that again, I know it can be done but its not DCC or does that not matter. It would be my first time trying something like that and I’m not to good with small wires. I do NOT want to mess up the only good loco I have.

Well, I do know it doesn’t have to do with DCC, unless you want to have special light effects. I can’t help you with the wiring, sorry. You can fit LEDs into pretty much anything.

GREAT WORK KEVIN! That ought to look pretty sharp in the dark.
